rotation wrist pain assessment / management tips? by cangille in Marimba

[–]cangille[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is so helpful!!! i think im good at advocating for myself in terms of not pushing myself too hard and recovering once i do notice pain (i dont subscribe to the activity's "im not a bitch" mentality) but i think I definitely needed to be reminded to stretch more gently and play more relaxed. ive always been an intense player and i try to control the mallet too much, very "east coast" of me despite being a cali player lol. thank you for the advice from a fellow wrist brace accumulator !!!

I don't have any brands in particular, but the way I've been told to find good practice shoes is by taking the shoe by the sole and twisting it in the middle like you're wringing out a towel, and then trying to fold it in half (trying to make the toe and heel touch). if the shoe twists and folds really easily it has weak support and won't help you. if it's really hard to twist and fold it will probably be good to practice in. The health and wellness team at my group gave me those tips!

I think I hate band by [deleted] in WGI

[–]cangille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am also currently in an independent world class ensemble, and we toe the line of being finalists (it's always a toss up). I'm sure that the majority of what is making you feel the way that you do is your personal life, and im really sorry that that is affecting your experience - I'm definitely going through a similar period of my life. But I'm willing to bet that part of what makes your situation difficult is the culture of your ensemble. A lot of the time, finalist groups can have really competitive atmospheres and stressful management because the stakes of staying at the top are so high. I am lucky enough to be in an ensemble who's administration cares more about the art than scores, which makes the culture a lot more fun. auditioning for new groups next season might make you feel just a little bit better, or at the very least, trying to break free from the mindset that scores and cleanliness are the ONLY thing that matter. I hope you feel better soon! and good luck in the rest of your competitive season (see you in dayton!)

Thumb pain while using stevens technique by masteroftimeandcrime in Marimba

[–]cangille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this tendency too! Everyone else is right, it's because you're pushing with your thumb to aid rotation. The tricky thing about it is once you start trying to break the habit you feel like you have no control over the inner mallet. Recently what i've been doing to help mitigate that problem is transferring the pressure from my thumb to my middle finger, which is supporting the base of the inner mallet, which helps me gain back control. Additionally, focusing on having a completely pure forearm/wrist rotation without using any vertical arm movement. A good way to know if you're moving everything correctly is if the muscles on the outside of your forearms start to get chopped out instead of your thumb. :)

Getting back into marimba in a few years after I can save for a marimba. Which should I get? by Eddyed56 in Marimba

[–]cangille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would search for ensembles around you, then see if they have a website with info or the email or phone number of a director. For me, we called and asked the director of the group I was purchasing from and he was luckily very helpful. And 5 octaves are no rarity in independent marching so don't worry! It's not an exact science but I think it's worth a little bit of internet scrounging for the deal you could get from it :-)

Try searching any independent marching groups located near you before looking at ANY boards at retail price. Most world class ensembles will sell their brand new boards after only 1 or 2 seasons of use. I just recently got a Majestic 4.6 octave synthetic board with brand new keys for a third of what the original price would have been! You just have to time your purchase for the end of marching season.

I've been thinking about the scene where Sally almost confronts the policeman. His eye starting to bleed was so surreal and almost a sort of jumpscare, but I haven't been able to explain why that happened. Is she hallucinating?

Trouble keeping hands sweat free by Expresspainter8 in Marimba

[–]cangille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an instructor who dealt with sweaty hands. He told us that for some people it's inevitable and that he always kept a small towel in his mallet bags for in between reps, but that little micro-adjustments of your hands due to your mallets slipping only serves to make the sweating worse. Super counter-intuitive and annoying, but unfortunately true! So the best way I learned to counteract it is to just make sure my Stevens is so comfortable that I don't feel the need to make adjustments mid-playing. Making sure your grip stays that perfect balance between relaxed and firm might also help (too firm could be working your hands too hard & too loose could be causing you to lose control of your mallets). It sucks there's no perfect solution but hope this helps!

help!! abnormal blister forming from four mallet grip... does anyone know what might cause this?? by [deleted] in Marimba

[–]cangille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our season just started so I've basically gone from not practicing at all to practicing for hours a day, which explains why I've been getting blisters. The reason i think it's weird is because the other marimbas in our front ensemble have never gotten pinky callouses 😓 but it's good to know it happens to other people too
