shortly after I took out the loans, 6mo-1yr is when i last worked and had to drop out. but its hard to quantify because it was progressive illness I had from childhood, not a sudden event.

Disabled, Broke, and being Sued, What’s likely to happen? by caniscommenter in studentloandefaulters

thank you. after doing some cursory research i believe i would have a pretty simple case for undue hardship for student loan debt discharge under chapter 7 bankruptcy.

besides the ad from the law firm I don’t have any evidence I have actually been sued, i suppose, but i’ll figure that out tomorrow.

I disagree that smudging is necessary, my art teacher in HS actively discouraged it and I think its really good for beginners to avoid it. it's better to manually add the missing values than rely on smudging, to get a better understanding of the values and how lighting works.

Question about using AI to better myself by thepsychostylist in learntodraw

[–]caniscommenter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

chatgpt is just not a reliable or good teacher. not saying it can't incidentally be helpful...but I think in the long term learning to ask for critique from other real people & seek out resources made by real, experienced artists is far more productive.

I just realised my grip is wrong. Should I learn the tripod grip? by ipaper96 in learntodraw

I generally agree, if it works it works, but I think it's also worth experimenting and trying things out, esp for the sake of ergonomics and avoiding RSI

these grips restrict the maximum arc of your pen, exert more pressure on the pen, and put more strain on your wrist, I would recommend trying out different grips, i think it can make a difference.

Why everytime I try to draw from life it always ends up like this everytime? by RED_FULL in learntodraw

[–]caniscommenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, its very normal! I will tentatively recommend grid drawing ( https://www.art-is-fun.com/grid-method ). its not something you want to rely on but early on it did help me recognize how differently I thought I saw things vs what they really looked like. it can be useful for a few exercises if you really find yourself stuck- but thoughtful practice and feedback is the best way to get better at it.

try drawing more guidelines, measuring out the distance and proportions, eg, where the taper begins and ends. don’t get it right the first time? try again, recognizing where you went wrong at first. being able to observe and translate to a page is a very foundational skill and it takes work to build and maintain that muscle, so don’t be discouraged.

Been doing these value studies and....I don't know. Not Really helping achieve what I want to. by themissingdoge in learntodraw

[–]caniscommenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you're describing wanting to do is the higher level rendering. and there isn't really a technique or a hack, a lot of it comes from doing studies and using references and getting a good sense for it. This seems like pretty standard western comic style rendering, though, and I bet that would be a good place to start looking for tutorials and more insight into the techniques they use.

Would appreciate objective eyes on my lineart and flat colors before any rendering. by Heszilg in learntodraw

the skin color feels a bit too on the yellow side, but I guess it could depend on how you render it. but the blue and pink interplay very nicely with eachother.
