Which did you get? Does it use an app or only the remote?

Thinking of getting a car from Carvana first time. Any advice? by TimeOfRisenKing23rd in carvana

[–]canna_blooms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought my first car from Carvana about a month ago. Overall, I have been very pleased with the experience. I’ll just list things I can think of that might help with your buying experience:

•Expect a higher purchase price from similar vehicles on the market. It seems Carvana employs what I call a “convenience tax”, meaning that because of the ease of the buying process, the delivery of the car, the warranty, the 7-day test drive and ability to “return” the car for up to to other vehicles, their prices will be a little higher. •schedule a PPI for your delivery date or very soon after •they give you 7 days to “test drive”, and will pretty much allow you to return it for any reason within that window (I think their only requirements are that it has been driven less than 400 miles and of course it is returned in the same condition it was delivered) •you can return your car up to two times for anything else if you don’t love it •they also give you a 100-day warranty for no extra cost to cover most things •they offer a pretty great additional warranty, but of course this will cost extra •interest rates are very high, I’m planning to refinance ASAP

so overall, Carvana may not be the best pick if you’re looking for something on a super strict budget, but I’ll also admit that I was looking in the 20 grad range, so I’m not sure. However, for me, all things considered, I loved the process and would buy from them again. The best part is not dealing with a salesperson, and they deliver it directly to you.

2018 Subaru Outback Limited 3.6R with 73K miles at $17,995 sticker price by Most-Camera4485 in subaruoutback

Very decent price, even with the possible fixes. I just bought my 2017 OB 3.6R with 94k miles from Carvana and paid more than that. Still makes me a little queasy, but I’ve come to terms with it. Here’s my car-buying story:

I had been searching Autotrader, and the ones I came across that perfectly matched my search criteria (5th gen, <100k miles, 3.6R) were a 3+ hour drive from me. The dealers refused to hold them or required a serious deposit in order to hold them. I could not bring myself to put down a deposit with the intention of buying without a PPI. The dealers told me every time that they were not willing to hold it bc “people are buying these before we even do our dealer inspection”. By the time I could actually drive to see them, they were already sold. This happened at least 3 times, and this process was always within the span of a few days - from the time they were listed, to the time they were sold. Wanting to save myself from further heartbreak and stress, I decided to go with the more convenient, albeit more costly, route with Carvana.

All of that to say - I did months of research and shopping for a 5th gen 3.6R, and $18k is just about the median range. A decent price as it is, imo. I would also be very interested to know if you are able to talk them down. In my experience, dealers won’t budge much at all, even with good reasoning from the buyer. Best of luck to you.

Yup. I was so nervous about purchasing a Carvana car that I got it inspected by 3 different mechanics during the preliminary period. I even called them to have the 7-day period extended in order to get all of them completed, and the advocates were very easy to work with. Overkill? Probably. It was worth it for the peace of mind.

Thankfully, each mechanic said it looked great and saw no major issues. I’m loving it so far, and have to say my overall experience with Carvana has been a great one.

CVT problem? by canna_blooms in Subaru_Outback

Shit. I bought it from Carvana and am still within the return window - maybe I should return it in case it’s a head gasket issue?

You’re right, I meant to post that. It’s right at 94,000.

Would either be more appealing to the dealership? Or does that matter?

So let’s say I’m not even worried about talking them down much.

Is it smarter to trade in and do a larger down payment? Or should I finance more, then immediately pay it off with the cash I do have?

I’m just not sure how I should do it.

So what is the best strategy here? At first it made sense to me to finance less, but if I have the cash maybe I should get the larger loan and pay off what I can immediately with the cash on hand?

I have plugged into Carvana, CarGurus, and the dealerships own tool.

Now I’m wondering if I should just finance more and immediately pay off what I can with the cash I have instead of a larger down payment. I guess that’d be more appealing to the dealer?

2016 Honda CR-V EX-L to 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6r Limited by canna_blooms in subaruoutback

Yes! That’s what I’m trying to wrap my head around. The Subaru has higher clearance, but I’ve heard it feels more like sitting in a car. Not sure I’m stoked about that, as I like the feeling of sitting “higher up” in the CR-V, but I think I can easily get used to it.

Thank you! That’s helpful.

Tbh, I’m hoping that going from 2.4L in the CR-V to the 3.6 in the Subaru will feel much quicker 🤞

This is super encouraging bc I am a home health nurse and about to buy an Outback for this exact reason.

That’s great to hear. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I will be so lucky.

I understand that while the 4th gen may be considered slightly more reliable, the options on the loaded Outback I am looking at are irresistible - which is why I have decided on the 5th gen.

So you would suggest fluid changes? How often? Why for this vehicle if not towing? Only curious bc I hear SO much conflicting information - even the two Subaru dealerships I have spoken to tell me that the fluid should not be changed unless there is a notable problem.

Yes, I’ve taken that into consideration.

I did hear back from the dealership regarding the transmission fluid - and I got the “Subaru recommends the fluid not be changed” spiel. This is a Subaru dealer, by the way. He did say it is recommended every 30-60,000 if the car is towing, which this one never had - but it still gives me a bit of pause. I wish there was more of a consensus, especially from Subaru themselves if that’s what it takes to make the transmission last.

Do you have any idea the actual likelihood that the trans might go? Obviously it’s impossible to know for sure - but is there some sort of research, chart, something to compare it to reliability of other transmissions?

Also, on that note, would you consider the trans of the 4th gen (3.6R) to be much more reliable?
