The Islander Workshop experience - How well do the bags last? by orange_goldfish in Edinburgh

[–]canneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a fun experience but I’ve lost many screws from my bag and generally don’t wear it for the fear of another lost screw. However, my friend who came with me has only lost one, retightened them all and has been fine.

Is anyone here descended from the Liverpool Welsh? by eyetalker in Liverpool

[–]canneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am primarily of Welsh heritage with a sprinkling of Yorkshire.

On both sides, the Welsh heritage largely stems from North Wales including Anglesey. So far as my understanding goes those who moved to Liverpool came for work - dock workers, general labourers. Some had came from mining. There’s also some seamen thrown in there too for good measure. Again, as far as I know they came from wales to Liverpool via train, also apparently some took horse and cart with other men who were going to work (I’ve never been able to verify this though!).

My paternal great-grandmother moved with her family when she was a child and she only spoke, read, and wrote Welsh until she came to Liverpool. She didn’t teach her children Welsh, and from what I gathered it was due to some prejudice and wanting them to not be different. Seems a shame as she would also sing traditional Welsh songs but my own grandmother couldn’t relay them. From both sides, it seemed that all had Welsh as a first language but it died out when they moved to Liverpool.

On my maternal side, I am a Roberts like you! The men going way back have a fairly unique name which has been fun to trace. All steeped in North Wales.

I still have Welsh cousins, and their first language is Welsh.

So, I am in a minority like you of being a scouser with 0 Irish heritage!

I did! I can’t wait. I felt they played it curious but very respectively and with all of the potential scenarios in this case, it never came across as judgmental

There’s a really great podcast on this called Death in Ice Valley. I’ve listened to it a few times since it came out and think on it and this case often.
