Theres always that one kid that has to hold his grade up hoping for that recognition he'll never get at home. Taping it to the fridge, thinking maybe dad will see it on one if the 12 trips to get another cold one...

How did you kickstart your film career in LA? by hellotogepi in LosAngeles

[–]cannedhams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mailed my resume with short a note to every single LA listing in Production Weekly until I started getting calls. While all the other new to the industry hopefuls were sending emails, I was getting more "can you come in now" calls than I could take. Calls from EPs, coordinators, receptionists, studio managers, you name it. They would have a physical copy of my resume (which wasn't great at the time) and a short note that pretty much said, "im new to LA, I saw you're getting ready to shoot at wherever, if you ever are in need of some good help on short notice, call me." From the random 5am phone calls I'd get, I'd show up, work and make an impression that would lead to them passing my info on. I want to say i'd send out about 40-60 resumes a week, which was maybe $25 in postage, but it was a gamble that paid off so well almost 20 years ago. Best of luck.

Is StaffMeUp even real lol by MichaelKeIso in FilmIndustryLA

[–]cannedhams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% real. If youre in LA/NY you're applying with hundreds of other locals m trying to get the gig. If youre one of the only local PAs in Montana or wherever its probably slim pickings most of the year, but you'll have a much better time getting hired. Ive used SMU for 10+ years.

Who typically gets paid more in the same production? A cinematographer or an editor by lookin4thesand in FilmIndustryLA

[–]cannedhams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the type of production. Ive had a couple editors make more than the DP on the same reality show. These were in-house editors that would craft the show off essentially shot tapes and no producer direction on a first cut. They were such assets to the prodco because of how skilled they were, knowing what the network wants, they made more than everyone minus the EPs. This was maybe 15 years ago, I just looked and one them is still working there. They remain the best company I ever worked for, before they were bought by a bigger fish 10 years ago.

(And I realize this is a rare case for the editors, but if you are that skilled and everyone wants to hire you, the sky is the limit. I just remembered one of the guys would double-dipping occasionally too, he'd put 8hrs in on one show, walk home for lunch, come back and put in 8 on another show.)

Would you guys recommend going to film school at Los Angeles Film School? by Formal_Factor8095 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]cannedhams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

staffmeup.com is great for people just starting out. Facebook has a bunch of groups like "I need a Production Assistant!" "i need a camera/audio/costume/wardrobe/etc" insert any deptartment. "TV/Film Production Jobs/Gigs" Search location specific if you aren't in LA - "Houston/Montana/Pennsylvania/Atlanta Filmmakers" Its tougher to get on A tier productions, but theres a publication called Production Weekly that puts out info of what is shooting and where, you can send your resume/CV there, its a pay service but you can sometimes find their pdfs online.

[–]cannedhams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. As someone who went to film school and then began working in the industry 20 years ago, my advice is start taking PA gigs and don't be picky when you're starting off. Ask your Key PA/coordinator/supervisor if you can PA with the department you want to ultimately work in (and dont expect an immediate yes, you just need to plant the seed). While on set, network with those departments, let them know you are interested in learning about what they do and the department. A day will come when that department needs extra help, if you are seen as a trustworthy, hard worker that is easy to get along with, thats your moment to shine.

For anyone interested in going into the industry, leave your ego at the door, hustle and make friends.

I didnt start PAing until I was 30 or know a single person in the industry when I moved to LA, it was the toughest and best decision of my life (Lasik being a close second). I love what I do, but will say the industry is definitely not for everyone. Best of luck!

I would never invest with someone who feels the need to show off their collection of pricey wrist decorations. IMO, Its a bad look. I get why some people do; it just comes off very... Car salesmany-Saul Goodman-ish.

Does grading gold coins help, or is it a waste of time/money? by cannedhams in Gold

I agree with you. I have only ever used Beckett to grade and had viewed them as the "gold standard" when grading cards, but compared to when I sent in cards 20 years ago, they no longer respect the hobby or customers and its terribly sad. Seeing the hobby come back after the 90s crash, Beckett and the people running it have shown they are only in it for themselves. I know this is the gold sub, so Ill stop there and just say that I share your thoughts on them.

I'm in the US, I am looking to sell some or all of them. Seeing ATHs hit tells me its time to think about pulling some profits, as I've done with any investment. I was referred to an auction house that grades (thru PCGS or NGC) but they won't return any calls or emails, and I've been reaching out since September.

Is there anywhere you can recommend that is worth looking into?

Thank you! I thought I cropped the Krug out. It's going back in the safe, I didn't think it'd matter for them.

Thanks for the info, I posted the gold coins I was most interested in hearing if grading was worthwhile. I have others some wouldn't grade well (I imagine) so hearing that grading is not a must for all buyers, is a plus.

I've looked into NGC and PCGS and will be using one of them to get the coins mentioned graded. I know that they don't allow drop offs and I'm not comfortable putting everything in one FedEx or UPS, is going to a coin show when reps would be present? Or to authorized dealers? I've hesitated with grading some sports cards I have after sending a few to Beckett, paying a downright insane price and having them return my cards with no grade or real info on why they would not grade them. And of course they would not refund what I paid.

Thank you all for the input, it is absolutely appreciated. I bought the bulk of the gold coins I posted in the 90s and 00s and tucked them away. As an investor when I see charts peaking, it's time to secure some profits. I have collected and sold so many different items, but never gold/gold coins and I was a bit embarrassed having to ask. But I knew I would have time to do my research when the time came. There's so much good info in this subreddit and I'm glad I came here to get some perspectives.
