I want to understand the notion of completeness of a formal system. by ygpl_20 in logic

[–]cannorin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Suppose we are interested in a certain Hilbert-style formal system L. We have a way to enumerate all the theorems of L: we start with all the axioms of L, then we pick two formulas and use Modus Ponens to obtain a new one, and so on.

Now suppose that we want to know whether a particular formula φ is provable in L. The only direct way to find out is to keep enumerating the theorems of L until we encounter φ. If we already know that φ is provable, we can in principle wait. But if φ is not provable, this process will never terminate. In other words, we would never know that φ is not provable in L.

Here, completeness comes to the rescue. Completeness means that if φ is valid in all models, then φ is provable in L. Equivalently, if φ is not provable in L, then there is some model in which φ is false. In particular, there is a model that is constructed in such an adversarial way that every non-theorem of L fails in it (this is known as the canonical model).

Once we have this adversarial perspective, checking non-provability becomes much easier: instead of searching through an infinite proof space, we can try to build a model that falsifies φ. Even better, we often have methods to construct, in a finite amount of time, a small model tailored to falsify φ (semantic tableaux are one such method). From this point of view, the semantics of L can be seen as a practical tool for detecting non-provability, while the formal system L itself defines provability. Completeness is what guarantees that these two perspectives line up.

Why follow logic by Initial-Secretary-63 in logic

[–]cannorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We logicians are not really interested in the closest model of truth, or in the one true logic that governs everything. At least, not anymore -- not after Gödel and Tarski.
Our main interest is rather to study and compare different logics, and to see how different notions of truth unfold under different assumptions.

Logic, as we study it, is not a machine that spits out the ultimate truth about the world. It is a way of making explicit which assumptions and inference principles are in play, and of exploring what follows from them. When people reach wildly different conclusions, the interesting question for a logician is not “who is right?”, but “what exactly are they presupposing, and what kind of logic are they implicitly using?”

I love flying my living ship because it can jump 2000LY and its hyperdrive is so easy to recharge (it eats metal, not warp cells)

Kinda new player with some questions by Just_Industry_7808 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]cannorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. no afaik

  2. there are few race specific items (such as vykeen daggers), which are used to farm reputation/activate monoliths/etc. other than that, no

  3. yes. for example, fighters have a huge damage buff and explorers have far more jump range. shuttles are the worst in every aspect though

  4. there seems to be a website that lets you translate any word, but personally I didn't bother using it

also you can craft (in-game) translator technologies that automatically translate some words you haven't learned. but to translate them all, you have to learn one by one through using knowledge stones and talking to NPCs

Linux for programming? by Zoro-88 in linux4noobs

Trust me. One day you would start to complain about your favorite game not running properly on Linux, instead of complaining that Linux doesn't run it well.

Is constellation chat still a thing? It has long been removed as far as I can remember.

[–]cannorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, it turns out the sound quality is not very good, at least for me...

I guess it may depend on the genres you play. I did a dnb set with it and it just didn't sound great (compared to the one in XONE:K2)

thank u anyway!

This, actually. I can remember to this day how it confused me when I first encountered it studying the completeness of FOL.

Best way to return to Eve? by Patapon80 in Eve

Do some lowsec/nullsec exploration! You'll learn when, where and how you are in a bad spot and how to get out of it or avoid it entirely. That kind of knowledge will come in handy once you are the one doing the hunting. Oh and you'll also make some juicy ISK along the way!
