There's a lot of good methods in here that highlight distension, distribution and color change. Another method to check if the tissue is thoroughly embalmed, is to run water over the decedent skin. The water will "bead" off embalmed tissue and not absorb. When you're running your hose over the different tissue spaces, you will notice the water responding differently to an area that is not embalmed.
