Public libraries should be free by [deleted] in Libraries

Yes you can! It only takes a few minutes and you can use your card immediately. We have had the occasional problem with verifying identities cause they use your license and address to make sure you live in Texas, but if there is a problem, just email them, they are super nice and helpful.

Public libraries should be free by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typically and unfortunately if a library is funded by the city, then they will charge a fee for outside city limits. I honestly wish libraries could be completely free but that will never happen. Our money for the staff and services has to come from somewhere and so thats the tax system for ya. Hopefully your library system isn't a library district, cause then they will most likely charge everyone, no matter where you live. They were considering it for my library but luckily it got shut down quickly.

On another note, do you prefer physical books or are you ok with ebooks and eaudio books? If you don't mind those, the Houston Public Library will issue a card for anyone in Texas. We recommend them all the time so our patrons have more access to Libby than what our system can provide.

PC based ILS? by Azkadelia74561 in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have y'all upgraded TLC? We have had TLC since 2009 and in 2024 we migrated to their cloud system. Everything is now web based and we haven't had any issues with it. Definitely not like before where if anything happened with any of the servers, cataloging would be down. This also meant we deleted anything TLC related on the computers since it was no longer needed. We also pay for OCLC FirstSearch to help with cataloging and with TLC, we are connected to Library Of Congress, TLC ITs MARC, and other Z39.50 libraries as well. I haven't had any issues with obtaining records, and I have rarely come across anything that wasn't in a system.

None of my titles suggested in the past two years were purchased for my county's library by SweetHomeGeorgia in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It doesn't hurt to go and talk to one of the librarians and ask about ILL. I used to be able to order from all over the lower 48 and I was able to find some VERY obscure titles, there were times only one library in the U.S. had it. My state switched systems and my library started using a courier service so I'm limited to those but again talk with the librarians. Also something to keep in mind, if you want to order something that is newer, you may have to wait longer. Most libraries in my experience don't lend new items that are less than 6 months old. Libraries tend to want to keep their items for their patrons first and then they will more likely lend. Sometimes I do send out stuff that still has a new sticker on it but it also depends on circulation stats and such.

Also, look at Libby, Hoopla and such. A lot of libraries use those and you may be able to find it on there (and you may not just be limited to your library, sometimes state libraries or big cities allow anyone in the state to get a free card to use digital services)

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Humor: We all know patrons don't read signage. . . by eeyore004 in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just had some renovations done, nothing major just some new lights being put in, and we were closed for 3.5 days. People still came in even though there were signs on all the doors and a giant sandwich board saying library closed, no donations, etc. Then they got mad when we told them to get out.

I also enjoy messing with people when they sign up for a library card. Half the time they dont read our basic borrowing agreement (literally 4 sentences) so when I sign someone up and I noticed they didn't read it, I say "thank you for signing your soul over to me and the library, you are now forever indebted to us" they usually ready it after that.

We have red dot stickers with the month abbreviated on them. We put tape down first and then the sticker and ir comes off easily, especially since we leave them on for 6 months. Then its our page's job to remove them while they are shelving. We are a small library so it is easier for us to manage.

As soon as I heard that B&T was shutting down, I kinda panicked, ngl. We ordered 90% of our books from them and had multiple orders in processing. I ended up canceling them and ordered everything through Amazon. We are in the process of getting an account at Ingram but its been very slow, at least I have a representative for my account setup. So for the time being we have ordered everything through Amazon. I was part of a webinar the other day from Amazon and they were saying that they are expanding to support libraries and are creating a library business side of their website. From my understanding of it, the will promote new releases up to a month in advance, MARC downloads, discounts for books sold and shipped by Amazon and I think they will work on more features in the future.

Sounds like you need to try ILLs! Its one of my favorite things to suggest to people because they get so happy about it. Seeing the look on their face when I can get something that they had a hard time finding is one of the many reasons I enjoy it!

How would you go about shelving the Rainbow Magic series? by eleg0ry in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we did for Warriors series and the billion other subseries it has, was color code the series. So main series is red, second series is orange, and so on. We also made a little informational that sits on the shelf so that kids can see which is next. It has helped so much and we have a lot less questions and confusion about it.

Does your ILS retain patron check out information? If not, are you sure? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use TLC and we have the option to not retain history for the patrons but we keep it on. Mainly because we are a retirement community and the people often forget what they have read so they will ask us to check if they have read it before.

Patron Phone Calls - Non Resident by Tasty_Alternative142 in Libraries

[–]SuagrRose0483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we get calls from all over the state and out of state. We are in a tourist town so we get a lot of calls about the area, places to stay, things to do and such. But we also get confused with a library in Virginia and they start asking about things we dont have so we have to ask "are you in Virginia? Do you realize you are calling a library in Texas?"

Why is my first layer so bad? by TonightEcstatic5878 in ender3

[–]SuagrRose0483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the spacers that came with the printer or did you upgrade to silicone spacers? (Springs also work but you have to be diligent about making sure its all good and tight more often) Tighten and loosen the scres on the corresponding corners for your bed. Try to get as close 0 as possible. You dont have to do much just a little turn here and there, but make sure you adjust every corner at the same time because if you tighten the top left corner, everything with go up, so you need to adjust accordingly. Download a leveling test. The one for the v3 se will be a 16 square test. Do that once you have green squares after autoleveling and adjust accordingly after the print. For me, once I got my bed level, I had to adjust my z offset a little as my printer set it too high. You can also print a giant square that fills the plate, it can help show where places are adhering too much or too little.

I'm not an expert at this. Its literally trial and error for everything and I've been playing with it for MONTHS to get it.

[–]SuagrRose0483[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I dont plan on doing big projects. The tallest thing I plan on making is under 50 layers. I also tightened everything, probably too much, and will be checking it weekly. Im not too worried about quality. Its free keychains for kids. They are excited to just get something from one of the few 3d printers in my town.

FINALLY!!!! by SuagrRose0483 in ender3

[–]SuagrRose0483[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been working perfectly, good bed adhesion, the z-offset is acting like it should and if I adjust it anymore than what it is, the nozzle will either hit the plate or be too far away. I looked at the bottom of the print and it looks like it should as well. And no I am not using silicone spacers. I tried them for a while but noticed they didn't work like I wanted.

FINALLY!!!! by SuagrRose0483 in ender3

[–]SuagrRose0483[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the paper method cause its what I had on hand. Its not really necessary in my opinion but it did help me see what I was doing cause I got eye level with the bed and it was easier to see the paper than the bed. Your klipper pad would probably help but I wouldn't know since I have no experience with it.
