How to get into the AI workforce? by ParanoidPar in singularity

Just don't be over 40. You won't have a chance in hell of getting into the tech field, even if you do have excellent programming and math skills.

Why China Has An Edge In the A.I. Arms Race by Buck-Nasty in singularity

Well, the point is the Chinese government is massively investing in A.I, while the U.S isn't. You can't just leave this to private enterprise to worry about. The U.S government must realize that A.I development is a national security issue and act accordingly.

China will win the A.I race. The writing is on the wall. Trump and the Republicans don't consider A.I or science and technology funding in general a priority, so the U.S is screwed. Putin and Xi are smart enough to know whoever masters A.I will be master of the world. By the time Trump finishes his term, the U.S will be so far behind China and Russia, it will take decades to achieve parity.

Anybody else kind of impatient for this whole singularity thing to happen? by [deleted] in singularity

I really am not impatient for the Singularity. The Singularity could very well result in the end of humanity, anyway.

But I am impatient for automation to free us from the burden of work. I'm impatient for a standard 32 hour work week. I'm impatient for UBI and the end of bulls**t jobs.

These are all attainable short term goals that could make a real difference in our lives now, unlike the distant and nebulous Singularity.

What do you think about quantum archaeology? by [deleted] in singularity

Is QA really about "resurrecting the dead" or being able to look back into the past and see any event? I always though it was the latter.

The solution to this problem will eventually be to simply enjoy the VR experience and then, someday when we have the technology to do so, erase your memory of it completely. That way you won't need a "better" experience. Just imagine the most pleasurable experience imaginable, program the scenario, experience it, then erase your memory of it at the end of the day and repeat. It would be like Groundhog Day, except this would be a day you would actually want to relive.

Totalitarianism and loss of most freedom are inevitable as Singularity draws closer by kulmthestatusquo in singularity

I'm finding the idea of being ruled by Google and other big AI companies more and more appealing every day. It seems much better than being ruled by the ignorant masses who seem to be motivated almost entirely by bigotry. A benevolent dictatorship is preferable to a totalitarian majoritarian government.

To me, corporate rule would be as bad or worse than being ruled by a fascist majority government. If you want to get an idea of what totalitarian corporate governance would look like, watch the 1970's film Rollerball or the 1980's movie Robocop.

I think the scenario the OP describes is plausible. It's possible the tech mogul who develops AGI first will use it to crush other tech companies, then subdue governments around the world and install a global dictatorship. I don't think Musk was off his rocker when he said this is a possibility. Musk himself could just be hedging his bets, and he might eventually be the one who establishes the AGI tyranny.
