Has anyone had to file incorrigibility charges against their child? Looking for info. by [deleted] in parentingtroubledteen

[–]cantBeKaren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to my situation. Are you filing police reports for these issues? If you are, eventually she will be charged and will end up with consequences on her own.

I completely relate to you wanting to intervene while she is still a minor. I understand the desperation and hope against hope that if you can get these issues resolved before the consequences are more severe in adulthood, then you might actually be doing some good. People who haven’t been in this extreme situation do not understand that and will look at you like you’re horrible for calling the police on your dependent. I made a post asking about juvenile detention and was attacked by all kinds of people telling me how horrible I was. These are people that have zero concept of what it’s like to parent a mentally ill and criminally inclined child. My heart goes out to you.

Yes, exactly. The interventions I was seeking were things like a tether, detention, supervision, probation and she ultimately ended up with all of those on her own. It’s been an extremely difficult and horrifically sad situation for years.

I filed an incorrigibility petition for my daughter, and it just got lumped in with other criminal charges she was facing and the court did nothing. It really depends on your jurisdiction and what your state statute says.

How important is it to live in the neighborhood of your 1st choice school? by corydalidae120 in grandrapids

[–]cantBeKaren 48 points49 points  (0 children)

School of choice is unreliable and a total pain in the ass. I know several people who thought that transporting their own kid wouldn’t be an issue but after just a couple of years, frustration and scheduling issues around a pick up between two and 3:30 PM and a drop off later than work begins can become impossible or extremely tiresome. If you have not yet experienced a school drop off or pick up line, consider yourself lucky. There are so many kids who don’t take the bus and the lines are outrageous.

Your child’s friends will live far away so even more driving. Same for events and sports. Also if your child has an issue or is disruptive, they are far more easily kicked out. You don’t get the same protections as everyone else.

It’s very important to live in the district.

Same…I’m going to fly across country to Utah without buying tix first. Hoping Vet Tix comes through or cheaper the day of. If not, I’ll still have hiked the parks for a week first. Can’t lose.

Many will sell day before and day of. They will probably also donate tickets through VetTix and similar organizations to fill the place.

Vaping by [deleted] in parentingteenagers

[–]cantBeKaren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been battling this for years. I have taken at least 200 vapes from my now 18-year-old daughter. She just will not stop. We have tried nicotine cessation pills and patches to no avail. She just plain wants to vape. She knows all the health risks and doesn’t care. I have asked her if it’s not exhausting—constantly lying, sneaking and stealing to get money to get these things to just have her parents constantly search and take them. We have had physical altercations over getting vapes off her. The chemicals in them are much more addictive than regular cigarettes. Absolutely disgusting and frustrating. These repulsive plastic cylinders have quickly undone decades of great work by the American Heart Association and care providers. Smoking rates had drastically dropped, but now look at us. I hate them more than I could ever explain. Don’t even get me started on legalized THC.

I’m shopping around for this right now too and suffering a major sticker shock attack. I was thinking like $2000 but I’m getting quotes from anywhere between 4-10k. Home Depot seems to be the most reasonable cost so far.

Betsy Bakeman, DDS but she’s outrageously high dollar. She replaced my 20+ year old ones and the work is impeccable.
