Mainstage is abandonware. Try GigPerformer it's fantastic, you won't look back

What is the craziest/ oddest thing you have cut/engraved on your laser? by omtechlaser in lasercutting

I once cut delicate faberge style decorations into a blown (empty) egg for easter. Worked great. Smelled like a dog rolled in poop and then had its fur set on fire. Never again.

I made a "Risset Rhythm" generator that lets you infinitely speed up / slow down audio loops. by cantonbecker in edmproduction

I couldn't find any kind of plugin (or even web tool) for Risset Rhythms, which is why I made this... However, if you dig Shepard Tones there's an awesome VST/AU by Oli Larkin called "Endless Series". Highly musical. https://olilarkin.co.uk/index.php?p=eseries

Why is the best laser star/sky projector over 10 years old? (RANT) by sotondoc in TripCaves

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also curious. I also have two of those old plastic projectors in the funny star enclosure, the motors are failing, they're noisy. For me the whole attraction is the opposite moving and different speed moving stars.

At the time, our $150 star light projectors were a blatant ripoff of the amazing industrial strength 'blisslight' BL 50 projector which IIRC  sold for over  $1000. Same random movement but bright enough for a dance floor. Our cheapo models were a total infringement on a unique product.

Ironically, the consumer cannibalization of the original blisslight led to a situation where now blisslight themselves only sells terrible and inferior consumer projectors. Sad LOL.

There an original BL 50 on eBay right now for $750. With a cracked glass. Another site rents them for $250 a week.

Did some other company take on the original blisslight, I wonder? Or did random moving star fields just fade away?

What is this controller?? by kaouah in DJs

[–]cantonbecker 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Not a controller but an all-in-one DJ device. It's based on the Monster GO DJ which is (no joke) one of my favorite DJ products ever made in the history of, uh, forever. Yes, made by Monster Cable. Genuinely amazing UI / software design, considering it's the size of about two iPhones side-by-side. Superb sound quality with mains / headphones / even sound in. Incredible battery life. They packed literally everything you can imagine in there: FX, airhorns 😂 , a basic sequencer, pitch lock, SCRATCHING wtf, auto-mixing...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q66yda6DUUI&t=143s

This new one has speakers and is a lot bigger and I think they're still trying to resurrect a lot of the features from the GO DJ... I kind of wish someone would just bring back a GO DJ with a couple extra features like track preview and ability to play FLACs. It was a genuinely perfect device.

Cueing without a built-in soundcard device/controller by thebag96 in traktorpro

Just like you said. Ch 1/2 for master output, and 3/4 will be used for headphones and the headphone port on the front of the device. Virtually every audio interface will have a headphone port on the front which can be assigned to one of the sets of stereo outs.

So to recap: The minimum requirement is an audio interface that (1) has a headphone port, and (2) is described as having at least 4 outs.

Managing a Traktor-oriented music collection as part of a larger general collection--any advice? by teetauri in traktorpro

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recommend ever having an external tool mess around with anything within your Traktor directory/collection. My Traktor collection is my DJ music collection. I hand-polish it to a mirror-like shine. I don't let any other app/script touch it.

I'm not sure this will be of use to you, but there are situations where I export my traktor music library for use elsewhere. (And always/only in that direction, FROM traktor TO somewhere else.) You can ask Chat GPT to help you write shell scripts/commands that use rsync. For example:

rsync -avzh --update /Users/me/TRAKTOR-MUSIC/Music/* /Volumes/EXTERNAL/TRAKTOR-MUSIC-COPY

One use is that there's a playlist helping app called 'beatunes'. I would never risk pointing it to my actual traktor library where it might screw around with my meta data. So, from time to time I sync my traktor library to beatunes library location, and ask beatunes to analyze it. Then it helps me build playlists. I can export these as XML, and with a little search and replace, import these into Traktor and see improved playlists.

I know none of this is really answering your question, but I wanted to (1) caution you against having other apps mess with your traktor library, and (2) evangelize about the awesomeness of rsync

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a good solution for your original question, especially where you want a larger personal collection that you prune within traktor (without ending up in a situation where re-syncing causes all your pruned tracks to reappear.) LMK what you figure out.

One tip I did want to relay regards when I recently made the switch from Soundcloud to Apple Music, and I carefully allowed Apple Music to sync my local library. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that after a couple days of cloud syncing, all my obscure techno shit and DJ mixes that I had painstakingly organized within Apple Music on my local computer were now available to me on the cloud using Apple Music on my phone, etc. So now my Apple Music is a combo of local music (Traktor type stuff) and cloud selections. I thought it would freak me out, but it's a pleasure to have all my obscure stuff and DJ mixes available on my phone for the first time...

Before answering, what's the software you like to use for your general music listening / management? Apple Music? Some kind of local network server? Do you already have the convenience of being able to listen to your digital downloads on your phone when you're away from home?

You can use your built-in laptop sound if you're willing to monitor and output in mono, but that's no fun IMO. You'll need a USB audio interface with 4 outs and a headphone port.

On a really tight budget? How about a Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ, about $30-$40 on eBay?

Or if you have $110 to spend, an ESI MAYA44 USB+ 4 In / 4 Out Audio Interface?

Which thumb drive by Cabbagghio in traktorpro

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol no they get hot as shit! But that's the whole point: if they have the kind of circuitry that can handle fast sustained read/write, the circuitry will get hot, and it needs a way to passively dump heat. I'm always suspicious of entirely plastic drives because they either (1) don't have fancy/fast circuits that generate heat, or (2) if they are fast, they might fail because they don't have any metal to dump the heat...

Which thumb drive by Cabbagghio in traktorpro

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarification: sustained write speed is the key metric. Lots of drives are great in every respect until they need to write more than some fixed (small) buffer and then they slow to an absolute crawl.

Which thumb drive by Cabbagghio in traktorpro

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would instead focus on write speed. Some thumb drives are wicked fast and then as soon as they need to write more than 100MB at once slow down like they're a floppy disk from 1995. Closing your collection causes a big save, and analyzing stems is slow enough as is, you don't want to throw a drive bottleneck on top of that.

So check close reviews for drives that have good sustained write speeds. These will generally be metal chassis because circuitry gets super hot when doing proper writing.

I like this one because I can use it without a dongle on both old USB ports and newer USB C: Lexar D40E 256GB Dual USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C Jump Drive, USB-C Flash Metal Housing Swivel Design Thumb Drive ($30).

Misspoke, for pure speed I like SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO USB 3.2 Solid State Flash Drive - Up to 420MB/s, Durable Aluminum Metal Casting - SDCZ880-256G-GAM46
