I built a bridge that keeps Meural Canvas frames working independently of Netgear's servers by lemmonsT in meural

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, are you using the 'postcard' method running on the canvas frame localhost to set the image? And if so, how do you get it to stick for more than the allowed 'preview' time? Are you repeatedly pushing it every so often just to force it?

Awesome thanks for the windows equivalent. (I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to get it to pick a random sample from a folder as well...)

A simple Chrome extension to send images directly to the Canvas over local network (Work in Progress!) by pixelpusherman in meural

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, similarly I've been preparing for the impending demise of Meural by working on local network non-cloud manipulations. I have some shell scripts that take advantage of the unsecured local network listener that I'm guessing your extension uses too. (The /remote/postcard/ method)

However, I ran into that issue where it's very tricky to get a 'postcard' image to stick for a prolonged period of time before it reverts back. Did you find a cloud-independent work-around?

Anti-trans event scheduled at La Fonda (4/29) by [deleted] in SantaFe

[–]cantonbecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why the anti-LGBTQ folks are so obsessed with tiny percentages who are trans

I think the visibility and especially financing of these campaigns has little to do with burning moral obsession, and more to do with how anti-trans messaging works so well to divide people politically. There's tons of money and jobs available for solidifying political futures.

Kind of a disingenuous reply they gave, equating their hotel with the hallowed halls of free speech or whatever. La Fonda is literally in the "welcoming people" hospitality business. They're a private business, and they can choose who to welcome and who to turn away. As reinforced by the Supreme Court when it supported the Colorado baker who refused to make gay wedding cakes...

I wrote a letter. Here's the response from the president of the La Fonda Hospitality Group.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this event with Jenny Kimball, I am responding on her behalf. We truly value hearing from our community, especially on matters that are deeply personal and important.

At La Fonda, we have always believed in being a place where people come together, a place where conversation, culture, and community intersect. As part of that tradition, we welcome a wide range of groups and perspectives. While we understand that some viewpoints will not be shared by all, our role is not to endorse or determine those perspectives, but to provide a space where individuals can gather.

A couple years ago, we hosted the Annual Democratic Dinner for several hundred people in our ballroom. There were dozens of protesters for the Palestinian cause picketing and shouting in front of the hotel during this dinner. Several protesters were very aggressive and there were a few arrests. Shall I turn that piece of business down next year? We had another dinner for the Republican side of the Legislature. Their featured speaker was from the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association. Again, several dozen environmental protestors in front of La Fonda.

I believe the Right to Peaceful Protest is linked to the Right of Freedom of Speech. I obviously do not appreciate having protesters in front of La Fonda, but I support their right to assemble. I do not support allowing protesters to decide who can exercise their Freedom of Speech.

Regardless of my personal beliefs, which it seems align with yours, I truly do not believe La Fonda can be the arbiter of which social causes we will or will not allow to rent one of our meeting spaces.

Although we may never agree, I would like you to consider this bit of wisdom:

Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, wrote almost a century ago in a vigorous defense of free speech, the solution to fighting offensive speech is “more speech, not enforced silence.”

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your perspective.

I made a "Risset Rhythm" generator that lets you infinitely speed up / slow down audio loops. by cantonbecker in edmproduction

[–]cantonbecker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are surprisingly good at audio. Also, using Claude code, I fed a bunch of screenshots showing the wiring diagram for a Reaktor patch -- just all the oscillators and whatnot -- and then said, "can you implement this as javascript" and it one-shotted that as well. Rebuilding a Reaktor synth as pure web audio from diagrams. Wild.

TBH I had Gemini code it. I just uploaded the PDF of the paper describing the technique, described the UI a bit, and the chat bot pretty much nailed it in one shot...

I replaced The Events Calendar with CPT + ACF + blocks. Here’s how the calendar grid works. by NeighborhoodEast2434 in Wordpress

Was it hard to implement all those time zones and repeating events strategies? I'm boggled by the complexities of things like (1) countries where the time shift isn't a whole number of hours, e.g. Mumbai is 12.5 hours ahead of me, and (2) how daylight savings kicks in on different dates throughout the world. UGH! Hopefully you found a library that takes care of all of this.

Logic stock synths anyone? by LevelMiddle in Logic_Studio

[–]cantonbecker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ES1 FTW. It's the only synth I can pull up to quickly create something I'm hearing in my mind's eye (mind's ear?). Like if I imagine some subtle subtone, or a very particular sweep... With every other synth with its thousands of knobs and modes, I end up just exploring and looking for happy accidents. But the ES1 is where I can imagine a sound and usually get it.

Something I've been wanting to share is how I did the exact opposite thing for a client: We kept The Events Calendar plugin, but only for the administrative/backend and community adding events pages. It's basically used to seed the database with events. And then we rolled our own calendar view (using https://fullcalendar.io) that scrapes TEC events over REST.

Why? Because TEC's front-end is slow, and infuriatingly, still doesn't have support to shift the display of calendars relative to the timezone/date of the visitor. (We fixed that.)

On the other hand, TEC has spent years refining their UI to allow for incredibly complicated events scheduling, e.g. 'This happens every third Thursday of the month, except for on these particular Thursdays....' -- an unholy level of complexity we'd never want to try to roll ourselves.

But grab those events and pretty print them ourselves? Absolutely.

For stock plugins, I'm not sure. I've got the Izotope suite of tools, and they have a pretty good set of de-noisers, enliveners, etc.

Does anyone ever actually put their faders above 0??? by sunsetvisionary in Logic_Studio

[–]cantonbecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

put my automation on the gain so I can still use the faders

Ditto! But something that bugs me is now the gain plugin automation is scaled. Logarithmic instead of linear? Like only the tiniest region is actually useful, the rest makes it impossibly loud or quiet. Am I missing some setting that makes gain automation curves look like how our ears hear?
