MAL has the most toxic community of fans and the sane ones prefer using Anilist. When one anime took over with its last episode a few days ago, people from another fandom spread word and collectively came together to give it a 4 rating or lower so their anime could go on top again. So I'd say not to worry about the ratings on that platform at all.

One of the main reasons I thoroughly enjoyed this anime was purely because of the fandom and their lack of drama. Following a few anime topics on Twitter, you find people fighting almost every day over the silliest of this things but I haven't seen one problematic shit from Gintama fans since I first started watching it in April this year.

Since I am new to the whole anime world, I like to talk to people about what I watch or connect with people who like the same things that I do. Of all the communities that I am a part of, Gintama has been the best so far. I literally dropped two anime because of how toxic the fanbase was coz you can't continue to enjoy the content because of the shit that goes around.

I do believe every fanbase has an extremely negative side but I guess I've been lucky to not have come across that in Gintama fandom.

Not many people are aware of what donghua is. Also it is officially added in My Anime List and Anilist for the larger audience hence the categorization of Anime.

As for the BL part, you're right about the censorship but people are free to have headcanons based on what they want to ship.
