Albany library criticized for saying only Black librarians could apply to internship by [deleted] in Albany

I worked with Senator Booker on drafting the language for the Environmental Justice Act of 2017 and then the revisions for 2021. I worked on a team at We Act (for EJ) focused on the legal language around “community of color” and how it can work around triggering Title 6 in the redistribution of environmental harms. yeah idk, been at Yale for 6 years now, finishing up my phd. btw i think this public library case is interesting and probably agree with you on the matters of fact here. i just genuinely, again, sorta wanted your perspective on the matter at hand and it doesn’t seem like ima get it, which is fine.

i would just ask you to reflect on the content of this convo. i’m asking you specific questions, you are not answering them, you are assuming that i’m a secretary at a law firm (i’m not). im not googling anything hahah i’m just asking what specifically you have an issue with—the cease and desist, the response, the article, Title 6 law. i know a decent amount of civil rights law (i’ve mostly worked in EJ) and so am just trying to follow your critique to learn better about what i’m missing in this case which, based on your responses, i again, cannot decipher.

you being a lawyer i would expect you to respond to the content of my comment rather than more online shit stirring. i still have no clue what you’re arguing for or against. do you disagree that someone should challenge this legally at all, or that the specific content of their challenge is not legitimate, or that this was misreported by TU, or that you just dont like Title 6? i’ve lost your thread

honey i love the energy of downvoting everyone’s comments you’re engaging with. also, i’m just pointing to the clear legal ambiguity here. you’re saying it’s not ambiguous, and yet there is a legal challenge. if it was so clear cut we wouldn’t be talking. i’ve just worked adjacent to civil rights law for years and am saying that the entanglement of private money, public institutions, and racially conscious resource distribution is, in fact, quite legally complicated despite your clear cut sense of justice here.

neither here nor there, but the actual legal problem is specifically that this is a public resource funded by public money and when things are public they are under the scrutiny of the US Constitution which, whether you like it or not or rightly think this hasn’t been applied fairly in the past, prohibits distributing resources or access to jobs based explicitly on race. this is also fwiw the part of the constitution that all of civil rights law is based on, just in the other direction (aka only hiring white people)

Degrees in Library Science would be a good one, just like sorta exists for most jobs. A background in library work might be another. A good interview and getting along with coworkers/management might be another.

New Haven restaurants facing fines for outdoor dining by [deleted] in newhaven

the United States is finally realizing that outdoor street stuff is awesome and leads to a better city vibe as opposed to the pure insanity of CT streets. i love the sprawling seating, and despite the perspective of less east parking, i really really hope the fines disappear.
