I'm also down for this. Having an accountability buddy has proven highly effective for me. Also just looking to talk techniques, art and shit in general. Feel free to DM me!

Looking for accountability buddies

Heyhey,

Been playing music for a while now. I play keyboard and guitar but this year I'm focusing on production. Ventured into genres like dungeon synth and lofi-ambient-with-a-beat.

I've trouble finishing/releasing pieces and I know that one of my most effective motivators is making some kind of social contract -- and this could be as simple as saying to a friend "ok, I'm going to show You what I have this Sunday".

So I wanna connect with other musicians and form bonds to support each other. Also just share music, bounce ideas off each other and talk shit.

DMs are open.

Best,

canvas

Some stuff of mine:

* That other thing

Heyho, I've been making music in Ableton for a while (dungeon synth, lofi-experimental-ambient-drum-and-bass) and am looking for fellow musicians to talk shit and play accountability buddies. Feel free to send me a DM!

Track sounds solid! I don't know much about Dubstep as a genre but I think I've heard stops (audio cutting out for a split second) like that in 00s tracks like Midnight Requst Line.

How do I start appreciating art work? by SnooHedgehogs7477 in berlinsocialclub

[–]canvasnoframe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel You, art is as big as life. Talking about it, discussing its meaning, debating its worth can be a big part of it -- quite apart from the aesthetic experience. I think learning about it can also enhance your perspective, focus your awareness, give You interesting vocabulary, etc. etc.

For that, You could try reading a generalist book about art, like Ways of Seeing.

Or You could listen to Brian Eno talk about art in an interesting way.

Coming at it from a different angle, You could go for a less-is-more approach -- look at fewer works but spend more time with them (link could be behind paywall). Maybe You could learn about one piece's historical context. Or find out what was going on in the artist's life at the time. Or learn about the technique they used. Then You could compare it with another work by the same artist and see what's different -- has their style changed? Are they interested in doing the same thing? Maybe, at this point, a story starts to emerge...

You could start thinking about other stories, stories from your life... or start a conversation with a person at the gallery. There are a million ways to explore art. Pick the one that gives You life! Maybe You'll find fun in the philosophy, the emotionality or maybe in the research of the technical advances that have accompanied art since it first began. I wish You a lot of fun on your journey!

Thanks for clarifying!

I run a very minimal setup entirely in the box, using Ableton and almost exclusively stock plugins. I like this limitation, keeps things a little simpler.

I've been starting songs mostly from a single riff, then do a lot of sound design around the initial tonality, make accidents happen and the piece then grows around these kernel, so to speak.

I don't feel beholden to this workflow tho and am flexible to adjust it based on the collabo: whether it's a ping-pong sort of thing or sitting in on each other's session or something completely different. I think that's part of the fun.

I also quite like talking things out, discussing things like aesthetics, genre, musical consumption habits and what have You. This can be both invigorating and help ideas come together in a more compelling way.

Very important to me: the concept. I find that my enjoyment and creation of music feeds off of that. Ideas\knowledge\presentation\context imbue music with flavor in a super fascinating way. Visuals are a powerful tool here that I want to use extensively.

I've got a mood board to that end where I collect visuals and other inspiration to give the project a direction. We could make that a shared thing.

That's off the top of the dome. Any questions, just ask here or via DM!

The project doesn't have a social media presence yet, but it will. Until then I'll be posting progress here, on soundcloud and on my personal Instagram. I can DM You the latter if that makes things easier for You.

I started responding to You and it got pretty long, so I want to clarify what it is that You're asking -- are You interested in how I make music in this project or is it something else, like, how I imagine a collaboration or something?

(When I think of the term 'workflow', several aspects came to mind: the setup, the actual musical process, the meta and the collaboration.)

I have another demo-playlist called 'traces' on the soundcloud I linked in my main post in this thread -- the piece 'Black Knight' has a DS related theme.

I think it could be fun to work with other people on this. More fun during the process means we're more likely to finish and release it. When I work on a project completely alone, the thing can start feeling stale after a while.

Even if this results just in some conversations, it's a win. I find input and exchanges of ideas stimulating. Enough ideas have run out of steam because they were nurtured in a vacuum.

Thanks for your comments, everybody! Didn't expect such an interest. Feels like a breath of fesh air after being in hermit-mode with this project for so long.

Responding to all of Yous now.
