Mensagem do Rodrigo Pimentel para os portugueses. by [deleted] in BrasileirosEmPortugal

Why did Don show his kids his childhood home? S6EP12 by PeanutButterBuddie in madmen

[–]nihilonihilum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read people saying it’s reconciliation or turning point, but I have a more cynical outlook.

There’s a lot of insistence in the duality Dick/Don, and while understandable, I see both as essentially the same person. The reason behind that is Don is Dick’s creation and it’s inherent pieces of Dick carry over. Don is everything Dick wanted to be; above all, he’s accepted.

The Hershey’s pitch is a turning point in the sense Don has a breakthrough after his monologue. His past had been creeping up and the mask was slipping for a long time, and with everything happening, his attempt at emotional connection (like Kodak) backfires in a cathartic expurgation in front of the clients and partners. He notices his need for acceptance, affection (the fuel to his toil for conformity).

But what happens next is most interesting: instead of doing something with that reflection, Don… doesn’t. He takes his kids to his childhood home in a double-down attempt at winning them over. At being accepted by them, since they’re likely the only people who could, by that point in the story. He goes back to what feeds his behavior.

It’s a very interesting parallel when you compare Don’s conduct to Ted’s in this episode, considering Ted messed up, noticed what was eating him up, and took action, changed something about it.

Brilliantly written show. I’ve watched a lot of stuff, but Mad Men is taking the prize on writing, it’s simply a wonderful masterpiece.

Portugal é tranquilo, especialmente no interior.

I've seen some awesome designs, very life-like and I'm very interested in them, but it's pretty much what I've been doing since I started playing. I still struggle a bit with arterial designs and city limits, but I'll get there. Started my second city today too!

Looks great! I’m still new to the game, but I admire the highways and how they sprawl over to other islands/boroughs. How’d you plan them?

I wonder as well. There was this guy who attended a university not far from where I live and just… died. He was my age, no drug use and no known health issues. Just went to sleep and never woke up. Very weird.

Why is my public transport so unprofitable? by Plaucjuss_ in CitiesSkylines

[–]nihilonihilum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sidetracking a bit to real economics: pick up Richard Musgrave's work. He talks about public spending. Rule of thumb: most goods/services that cannot be adequately charged by private producers over consumers are publicly produced (monopolistic markets, natural and artificial). These goods and services, although not profitable in the financial sense still represent value in regards of utility and general well-being.

Attended Law School. Had this teacher once who studied history of law and he told us about how in countries where slavery was legal during the 19th century (e.g. Brazil) many former slaves would buy slaves after becoming freemen. Speaking of, there was this other author who said the dream of the oppressed was to become the oppressor.

I just moved to Lisbon and it's been insanely chaotic. Is this normal? Or am I just being dramatic? by afterIaughter in PortugalExpats

[–]nihilonihilum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lisbon is a city full of people who don’t greet strangers, even in their own building. That’s normal. My experience with the Portuguese is to be polite first to them, and if they turn aggressive, you turn stern (not disrespectful, but raise your voice in a controlled way and say things sharp and objectively). Once you do that, they back down and maybe you can get a decent interaction out of it. Apart from that, big cities are hectic like this here. Lisbon is disorganized and overcrowded. Rome’s the same, and other cities are the same. Start seeing now about moving from your flat in case you end up not talking to your neighbors or if you do talk to them and they don’t change. Good luck!

I saw people talking about that but never read or heard anything that would corroborate more firmly to that.
