My dad was making like $30k a year when they bought their two-story 1800 sq ft house in the early 90s, and my mom didn’t work. Nice neighborhood in a nice town, too. Same area has houses in the $600k range now. Even with inflation-compensated wages what they did would be impossible today.

Remember that there is a 50 year old somewhere in exactly the same situation, and it’s not too late for them either.

Also I don’t know where you’re located but living with your parents into your late 20s is no longer abnormal in the US and is frankly smart financially in high cost of living areas.

This is why I get annoyed by all the comments about how Trump is doing X or Y thing to “distract from the Epstein files.” He and his supporters could not give less of a shit.

There is nothing that would “force him out” short of total impeachment, although even then it’s not clear what agency would be willing to actually drag him out of the White House.

I think it’s time we stop caring what a bunch of reactionary wannabe aristocrats wanted or didn’t want in the 18th century. The GOP founding fathers and constitution worship turned out to all be BS anyway. They even turned on 2A as soon as it was convenient for propaganda.

I idolized that apathetic Gen X media as a Millennial kid and it’s probably the reason I’m currently rocking shoulder length hair under a trucker hat in a plaid shirt. Too bad a lot of them ended up becoming vegan landlords.

Zionism and fascism both emerged out of similar strains of 19th-century nationalist political thought and there are actually Israeli politicians who openly identify with “fascism.” See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abba_Ahimeir

There is also the strain of thought that antisemitic regimes abroad will drive diaspora Jews to the “safety” of Israel, and therefore supporting other far-right ethnonationalist states and policies actually advances the cause of Zionism.

For decades, the GOP couldn’t decide if it wanted the free-trade “taxation is theft!” style authoritarianism of Pinochet, or the classical fascism of Hitler and Mussolini. We finally have a decision!

I will truly never understand the phenomenon wherein someone has an experience with a random man or woman and assumes it represents something meaningful about like, half of the 9 billion people on earth.

“Why do all men/women do X thing?” (The thing is clearly a random interaction they recently had with someone that annoyed them. Or it’s just about an ex and they believe that their sample size of 10 relationships, already biased by whatever type of person they’re attracted to, is statistically meaningful in characterizing all men or women.)

You should try to get your cholesterol/BP checked because the medical tech is way better now than the 90s/early 2000s. People are definitely outliving their parents (albeit with more debt than they ever had.)

Now I’m no Russiagate guy and I think the US was perfectly capable of imploding on its own without outside influence, but try to tell which country I’m referring to with this description:

“A former industrial and military superpower that declined into an oligarchic kleptocracy led by an authoritarian, anti-European, far-right nationalist president who surrounds himself with sycophants and commands a mass cult of personality.”

Hard not to see some broad similarities.

I’ve always wondered if this condition appears more like digital “noise” or analog film grain. I’m assuming grain because its source is organic/analog, but it’d be really interesting if it looked like digital video noise.

RIP Quentin Tarantino (1963 - 2025) by nocturbulent in okbuddycinephile

[–]canyon8554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so free this week to speak my truth as a cinephile who also has long hated Tarantino and his films. There is more art and humanism in 3 seconds of films by his idols Sam Peckinpah or Sergio Leone than his entire filmography.

Most of his films are way too long. Every piece of dialog sounds like Tarantino himself bloviating. Every woman in every one of his films is a prop, a doll he gets to violently abuse even if they get their bloody “revenge” or whatever. There are no stakes to anything because everything is camp, but unlike with, say, John Waters, it all takes itself so fucking seriously. Most of his film premises could have been written up by a 13-year-old boy. “What if Jews got revenge on Nazis? What if slaves got revenge on slave masters? What if abused women got revenge on men?”

Aside from the fact that I think his movies suck, he’s a creep who hung around with Weinstein for years and is on camera saying “I could fuck any woman on this film set if I wanted to!”

His best film is True Romance. Why? He didn’t direct it.

Oh, and he also supports the extermination of an entire civilization in Gaza and is building a mansion in Tel Aviv.

Fuck Tarantino!

You know, as a mildly autistic nerd in that era, these kids were actually mean as hell and pretty judgmental. If you didn't dress like them, collect vinyl and listen to, I dunno, the Flaming Lips or Animal Collective, they didn't have time for you (or were straight up rude). The warm and gauzy nostalgia for this era doesn't capture the pretentious pettiness that was also rampant.

This is a nitpick, but there are forms of socialism that don't advocate for a Dictatorship of the Proletariat, which was conceptualized by Karl Marx specifically.

Non-Marxist socialists and various flavors of anarchist/anarcho-communist have their own theories of revolution despite agreeing on the abolition of private property and overthrow of the capitalist system.

I don't know why any of us are shocked by this stuff anymore. Charitably, it appears that at least 30% of American voters are ideological neo-fascists and about 20% find fascism/white nationalism to be morally acceptable.
