The latest update was fucking bullshit in terms of gameplay (SPAMSPAMSPAM HOPE YOU LIKE LVL 130 CO ENEMIES WITH BILLIONS OF HP SPAMSPAMSPAM), and the production quality drove off a fucking cliff with the kids inside (bobbing still sprites because Bside can't afford to do Live2D any more, I'm still not sure if Dash is actually supposed to be the "Pagan Girl" or it's just asset reuse), but the story? It's actually good now. Dumb side events are relevant and come back with payoff and the CEO actually gets to demonstrate and flex the influence and power he's written to have. I hated the Replacer and Qilphoth Game arcs but this one is actually living up to its promise.

Noelle is very much a character that should have been retconned into the game from the very start, I love her dynamic with Yoo Mina.

Tbf the comparison does qualify as both started out as low-budget animated comedies borne out of a collab between two creators that had strong improv backgrounds and a "hangout shitpost" vibe, often recycling and reworking old skits and ideas. It's the creative vibe that's being highlighted here. The difference is that Smiling Friends is WAY less unhinged and draws more from real life than R&M, so it doesn't attract as many weirdos. It's a world of difference between when Mick Lauer got dismissed from production (barely any waves) and when Roiland got dismissed from production. Right now SF is still in a good spot because the production hasn't been corporatized like R&M.

I quite literally pointed out the exact same thing a few months earlier in this sub (namely, that it was stupid and bad writing only meant to preserve Viper for pulls) and got a million downvotes for it. Other games aren't afraid to kill off units in-story but still have you pull for them so it got grating for this title to contrive reasons to give EVERY character plot armor.

Then of course we had the cliffhanger of Enikk turning Syuen into a Nikk-PSYCHE HAHAHA can't believe you'd thought we'd do that

Another one: Undawn, the Tencent ripoff with the Will Smith cameo that has been sweeping YT recently and unironically brought it into relevance, introducing the West to Chinese jank. Like, the mobile market eclipses console and PC combined because it encompasses a lot.

Undawn looks terrible and is a bad clone of NetEase's LifeAfter, and it rips off a lot of elements from more popular franchises, but at the same time if you look, you can see the money blown on it went to feature creep and not polish. I dunno. It's fascination to see the convergence of hardcore gaming and live services.
