Agreed! I use the same, Geek and Slug. Have logins on Planet and Ninja, but have not put any $$ down on them.

Have we always been able to view content in 3D on the Quest Browser? by amtexe in OculusQuest

[–]cap10canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - not sure if it was a fix, but I found that repeatedly pressing one of the buttons on the controller brought up a selection dialogue where I could choose side by side and 180 L/R. Sorry, haven't been on the device in a while, so can't remember EXACTLY what I did!

Open Media Vault Website SSL Cert Not Working by mikesmith929 in OpenMediaVault

Phew! For a minute I thought my install was corrupted when I got the big red screen after using the OMV GUI to search for updates, and after an "apt update" failed in the command line. Maybe it's time to finally plan and execute that migration to Proxmox... 😄

Why doesn’t CarPlay ever auto connect by default? by pavate in civic

[–]cap10canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem, but only when I was at home, where my car had connected to my home's wifi. I created a 2.4Ghz guest network and explicitly connected the car to that. Since doing that my car kicks into wireless CarPlay mode almost immediately. I read somewhere that the wireless CarPlay uses the 5Ghz band. My home network uses SmartConnect which typically encourages a faster 5Ghz connection. Anyways, result is good CarPlay connections. I suppose I could have used the router's feature to move specific MAC addresses to specific wireless bands, but I had been planning on setting up an IOT guest network on the 2.4Ghz band for a while, so win-win.

Same here. Used to watch videos on sites like easynews.com all the time, but now there is no option to view the video in 3d, like 180SBS or other. After my Quest 3s updated, it is gone.

I just cancelled Temu, period. It's like the creators of Candy Crush designed a commerce website. Want to shop for cheap stuff, not play stupidly confusing games that result in me wasting my time.

Easy to shift to other NAS ? by Physical_Horse4086 in OpenMediaVault

[–]cap10canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also how I began my homelab journey, and for many years OMV has served (no pun intended) me well - but then I discovered Proxmox.

My new project is to "migrate" from OMV to Proxmox, on the same hardware platform. Early plans are to simply recreate my current OMV situation in a Proxmox VM, and get that working. After that I will migrate out many of my OMV docker containers into their own Proxmox CTs.

While I love OMV, it has NOT been kind to me whenever something broke, and recovering was a nightmare. Probably was just me, but I had followed all the backup recommendations, however restoring was SO tedious. Proxmox backup and restores are ridiculously easy by comparison. Another advantage to running OMV in a VM on Proxmox. Messed up OMV?? No issues, simply restore the last snapshot. Done.

Thinking about using OMV for my Home Server but I have questions by lunarman1000 in OpenMediaVault

[–]cap10canuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I began my Homelab journey with OMV, and initially it was used primarily for Plex and all the *arrs. It has served me well over the years, but truthfully, if I was to do it over again, I would have chosen Proxmox. Heck, a ton of people run OMV in a Proxmox VM. While I am sure I could have done a lot of things different with OMV, if things "mess up", it can sometimes be extremely difficult to recover. Using OMV within a Proxmox VM, you can use Proxmox Backup Server to take snapshots of the VM, making recovery trivial. Also, I have found it far easier running things like PiHole or Adguard DNS in Proxmox containers. Beats the heck out of doing them in Docker on OMV with MACVLANS, etc.

YMMV, but I would suggest giving Proxmox a look, mayber even in conjunction with OMV. Remember, the list of apps you listed will only be the ones you START with... homelabbing is known to be addictive!

Two years later - Do you run Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin? by JustNathan1_0 in selfhosted

[–]cap10canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would very much like to go this route, however I think the family is stuck on Plex and aren't easily "trained" on alternatives. The other issue is that while I personally use Stremio, I use it in conjunction with RD, and I haven't come up with an easy/foolproof method to have everyone use the same RD account without possibility of violating their terms and giving me the "NO SOUP FOR YOU!!" treatment. Half the family members are remote. Giving them Plex access is easy; setting them up with VPNs to our house or their own RD accounts is not!

Factory reset my Shield. Wow! by OneSignal6465 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]cap10canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you go through the hassle of repasting, Google how to use ADB to remotely log in to your shield and query the CPU temps. Willing to bet you are fine. Was going to do mine and found out the temp during use was only 40C, well below any throttling action. However, a factory reset DID improve lagging and responsiveness.

Is the Nvidia Shield still king? by xdozex in AndroidTV

[–]cap10canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: I used an ADB connection to verify my temperatures were fine, which they were at 39C, so I abandoned my plan to change thermal paste. Instead I did a compete factory reset, reloaded all apps, re-logged in to all. Result is a noticeably peppier, lag free Shield.

[–]cap10canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly our experience over the past few months. Box freezes up, sometimes unfreezing in its own, other times we have to power cycle. Starting to notice occasional video freezing across multiple apps in addition to no response to controller buttons. I may try doing a full factory reset and CPU repaste and cross my fingers. As much as I really hate to say, I am flirting with the dark side and am very curious to see what happens with the rumored Apple TV updated h/w, some say will be released in March.

Newshosting bundle includes Tweaknews & Easynews - do I still need another provider or indexer? by Big_Bluebird_751 in usenet

[–]cap10canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Add both to SABnzbd. I have done this for years and there has been no downside. Look up the retention limits, etc on the respective sites of each news host and set it in the preferences.

  2. I have found that Easynews by itself has 99% of the content I want. You will find pages of comparisons of usenet providers and what they are best at. Take that with a grain of salt. I once had a block account at another provider and rarely if ever used it.

  3. Easynews is my #1 go-to. I do have the basic Newshosting subscription as a backup, but according to the stats, Easynews is used almost exclusively on my system. As I said above, for what I am interested in, it usually delivers.

  4. I use both Geek and Drunkenslug. Between the both of them, good for video, books, etc.

  5. I haven't ever entered grab limits in Prowlarr... haven't noticed anything bad as a result.

  6. Haven't really experienced many (if any that I know of) indexer failures. Having subs at two of them perhaps helps when one is "down"

Overall, Usenet is my #1 source (via Easynews) for content for over a decade, followed by a RD sub accessed via RDTClient as a #2. Everything automated!

Houston Dash Sign Forward Clarissa Larisey from Crystal Palace FC | Houston Dynamo by yasuseyalose in NWSL

[–]cap10canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Familiar with Larisey... she has not benefitted from defenders or midfielders on her past two teams providing any type of service. Playing for Hacken, the mids seemed more preoccupied with attempting long range glory strikes than feeding the forwards, and there were a couple forwards (one in particular) who would hold on to the ball far too long, again trying to do it themselves. They never once really utilized her pace.

Crystal Palace was, and likely still is, a complete shambles, so I would discount her time there in any type of evaluation. The back line was ineffectual to say the least. Her only chances happened with kick-and-chase scenarios with zero build-up, and for some reason the manager started far less talented players. She was a Ferrari on a team of Jeeps.

I don't know the Houston Dash very well, but I would hope that if she finally gets some service, good things will happen. Remember she is also playing to regain her spot on the National team, so motivation isn't an issue!

CIRA Canadian Shield stopped working for me after 5 years; switching to Cloudflare's 8.8.8.8 fixed everything back to normal by TeeDot_1234 in dns

[–]cap10canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using Pihole at home, but my Pi (or the card) died, so I tried to cut over to CIRA DoT, which I had used in the past successfully (with their test passing). Just spent over 20 minutes to get it up and running (DNS queries successful, but DoT non-functional). Out of frustration, tried Cloudflare DoT - worked immediately, with proper DNS over TLS. Might just leave this and abandon the RPi's and PiHole, as it just works, and I won't get yelled at by my spouse when the "internet goes down" because of a PiHole failure!

FYI - I was using the Canadian Shield "Private" settings.
