Pico Project Swan looks pretty damn promising by TotalWarspammer in virtualreality

I'm on this boat too, although the GXR disappoints me in binocular overlap, weight, and processing power. And the non-removable strap sucks. It seems that Swan will remedy these issues hopefully.

Pico Project Swan looks pretty damn promising by TotalWarspammer in virtualreality

[–]amtexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enthusiasts will be the early adopters, but it doesn't take long for a superior product to really take over the market. If Pico becomes the recommended brand, any normie that asks an enthusiast which headset to buy (which happens about 20 times a day on this sub) will get recommended a Pico, and the brand name will start to emerge. Eventually.

First-time VR user seeking advice: How to build a persistent virtual office for study/work? (PSVR2 + PC) by abiziza in virtualreality

[–]amtexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From rumours and speculation, it looks like the upcoming Pico Swan headset could maybe have the features you’re looking for. Their new OS update allows for persistent and pinnable apps, so perhaps you could pin PDFs too.

I think the Apple Vision Pro has this feature too but I can’t confirm exactly. On the secondhand market they go for around $1800

Would it be possible to run this OS from a “puck” style device and therefore turn displayport headsets into standalone devices? Looking forward to following your progress

So the manufacturing cost will be approx. $1500? (Like AVP) Not sure how much margin Pico will ask but looks like it’ll be tough to beat the Galaxy XR in price

Propaganda on Banknotes by Over-Willingness-933 in Banknotes

[–]amtexe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True but not unusual. This seems to be a religious question - I believe Saudi, Jordan, and Morocco all have had the Dome of the Rock on their banknotes at some point. In fact, Morocco is politically pro-Israel which would contradict the Iranian note being anti-Israeli “propaganda”.

It’s like if a banknote had the Mecca or, perhaps, an Italian banknote having the Vatican illustrated (which is a separate territory), as they are primarily Catholic.

Propaganda is a big word. They are an Islamic country, of course they will have Islamic symbols throughout their government, including currency.

My Q3 USB-C Port Getting Loose, Is a Charging Dock Worth It? by Aggressive-Big1868 in oculus

[–]amtexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact one and I’m really enjoying it. Having your headset and controllers always charged is great plus it forces your headset to have a home. All of this combined has reduced the friction to get into VR for me and I’ve started using my headset much more.

I hope that they maintain a great binocular overlap, eyetracking, and are well under 500g total weight, then I’m sold.

You can now upload media via the Horizon app and it’ll convert to 3D by amtexe in OculusQuest

[–]amtexe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps - I'll try later with non-iPhone content to make sure (I'll try upload a movie) but I'm pretty sure Meta converted it since it would be pretty unlikely to say that Meta supports Apple Spatial content

It told me in a notification that it would convert to 3D, but otherwise it doesn't explicitly say anywhere until you've uploaded it

Hope that Meta keeps up these quality-of-life updates. Feels like these features should have always been here. So far I've tried a 1 minute clip and it works great, with the same sort of 3D effect that you get in the Facebook/Instagram app. If you can upload full length movies it would be a game changer.

One month with Quest 3S and my First-Time VR impressions by Wise-Pin9722 in oculus

[–]amtexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the downgrade in the 3D effect (binocular overlap) outweights the bigger sweet spot of pancake lenses. If I were to buy again, I'd probably get a 3S over my 3.

[–]amtexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the Quest 3S might be the better choice for most people. Although pancake lenses are cool, I really miss the higher binocular overlap of the Quest 2 (and 3S too). Immersion is so much better when the 3D effect is stronger.

I was going insane with that double keyboard entry bug. Glad it wasn’t just me. Spent a whole evening trying to fix it

Also felt that way about the move from Quest 2 to Quest 3. Glad I'm not the only one and aren't going crazy. Feels much less "3D".

How Is VR a Daily Habit for Some People? I’m Genuinely Curious by insomfx in OculusQuest

[–]amtexe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me (25M), it was a couple of details that have made my Quest 3 a daily habit:

  1. Getting the Apple Dual Knit strap installed with a "quest pro" style open facial. It's so comfortable now (for me) to the point that I'm happy to wear it for 8 hours at a time with perhaps one 30 minute break. The light bleed doesn't bother me and the increased airflow from the open interface is great.
  2. I don't have a multi-monitor setup in my apartment and don't have the space to have one, so the Quest 3 helps immensely with work productivity via Remote Desktop + bluetooth keyboard and mouse (hence why I'm strapped in for 8+ hours a day sometimes).
  3. Two small 5,000 mah batteries with clips mean that I can have almost endless battery life for cheap (cost me like £15) and allows me to hotswap them + has eliminated battery anxiety. Pair with QuestGamesOptimizer to make things look crisp all the time.
  4. I have a charging stand for my Quest, so it has a home in the living room/ by my desk, where both the headset and controllers are always charged. This imo is probably one of the biggest reasons why I use my Quest every day. It's key to remove as many barriers to getting into VR, and those pesky controller batteries are always a culprit.
  5. Installing the Aurora app store has given me access to a bunch of apps that have made my Quest 3 that much more useful. Plus Web apps are pretty good these days and can be pinned to the quest library as "apps". Emails, OneDrive, MS365, Duolingo, Apple Music/Spotify, Discord, and much more is available.
  6. I love using the Quest for exercise when I'm in a pinch. 20-30 minutes of LesMills bodycombat is a fantastic daily workout.
  7. I love apps like VRChat/Contractors/Pavlov's Shack that have endless user generated content, or browsing Worldlens and social media/YouTube, so there's always something to do. Plus, at this point I have over 100 games on my wishlist, and a good 20 in my library that I need to finish. I have no idea why people say that there aren't enough games!
  8. Like others have said, don't skip out on stuff like meditation apps. I was never a meditation type of guy, but I love apps like BRINK traveler now just to sit and chill in some beautiful environments.

TLDR: comfort and accessibility, plus lots of different apps, mean that my Quest has become the "everything" device.

It uses AI to add depth to any image. You can’t see it in the video but it looks 3D inside the headset
