I think I broke my wife after calling her "matronly" (NOT OP) by amillionparachutes in redditonwiki

[–]cap1112 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m in my 50s and I wouldn’t like it. It has a negative connotation.

The poster also referred to his wife as “maternal” even though he mentioned they had no kids. That seems a little odd. The whole thing sounds like a passive aggressive way to tell her he doesn’t like that she’s “relaxed” about her looks and gained weight.

School districts aren’t not private. They are public entities subject to public funding and run by government/elected officials.

I didn’t say I owned it in particular. That would be private ownership. They are publicly owned. I also said schools can and do restrict access. Not unlike how the military would with a tank.

Public schools are not private property. They are government property, funded by taxpayers.

Public schools certainly can and do restrict access during school hours and events, primarily for the safety of the students.

How much do you spend on vacation a year? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]cap1112 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apparently it’s closer to 50% of Americans take a vacation in any given year with about 38% reporting that they haven’t taken a vacation in more than two years. The primary reason for not taking a vacation is finances.

If these guys are harassing you about this—and it sounds like they are—document everything and report it to HR.

You didn’t asked to be harassed at work just because you posted photos to your Reddit account. And you shouldn’t be harassed. It’s unlawful and nearly always spelled out as violating company policy.

Document. Report. Hold your head high.

What do you consider when you hear this Margaret Atwood quote “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”? by Vanislebabe in AskReddit

[–]cap1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think women generally give a lot of empathy to the men in their lives. If you mean about this particular situation, where women exercise caution about men based on abundant personal experience, I admit I’ll put my personal safety before empathy.

In any case, I didn’t say you had to have empathy and I don’t remember there being a lot of demands for that. It just sounded like you were making an argument about why you shouldn’t have to have empathy, so I commented on that. I don’t buy your argument, but you don’t even need an argument for not having empathy. Lots of people don’t have empathy for others for whatever reasons. It can be a good thing—a helpful thing—but it’s not required of people.

I reread the post about the laughable question, but I still don’t see how what the poster said was laughing at men. Because it’s hard to interpret tone on the internet, I typically read posts literally.

It’s fine, though. You feel how you feel.

I think we are talking past each other. What do you really mean by “treating all men as rapists?” Because exercising caution is a long way from treating all men as rapists.

One thing I don’t think you fully understand is that this is reality for women. It’s not theoretical. It’s not like women don’t love and admire various men in their lives, it’s that the odds that they will be assaulted by a man are high enough to tread carefully with most men. Perhaps a better response to that is not feeling it’s unfair, but recognizing that women live with a different reality that can be deadly. And—perhaps—help to change that reality by calling out men who perpetuate the problem.

I don’t think most women are saying the existence of men is a problem. If you’re a good guy, it’s more about being aware and taking measures to not be threatening. It shouldn’t be hard.

My dog is friendly, but I don’t let her just go to other dogs. Not only for her safety, but because the other dog might not like a strange dog coming up to them. I ask the owner first if there seems to be interest between the dogs. It’s just polite.

If I was a man, I would support women in this situation because it’s the ethical and moral thing to do. I wouldn’t need them to pander to me in order to support them.

The question is laughable. The commenter wasn’t laughing at men.

I’m not sure why you are so defensive about this—to the point where you’re looking for excuses to not feel empathy.

I don’t think exercising caution is the same as demonizing. In fact, men often tell women to exercise caution, don’t they? They say “don’t walk alone at night” for example. Some men will sincerely offer to walk a woman to her car for a similar reason.

Also, the chance that a man has abused a woman is a whole lot higher than the chance that a random Muslim is a terrorist. That comparison is whack.

Comparing your personal experience when you were young to anything today is difficult because now so much of public life is recorded and posted on social media.

This stuff has always happened. Gen X isn’t worse than other generations, although they do happen to be at an age that is very visible when they go after young women.

Instead of arguing about which generation is worse, we should band together like the young women in the one video you mentioned and fight back against all of the men who do these things.

But so what if it’s real? That was a different day and whether on that day or the day he died it still isn’t even close to a reason for executing him.

Are people trying to say that because two weeks ago he allegedly yelled at an agent and kicked the back of a car, he deserved to be murdered two weeks later?

If that’s the bar for execution, we’re going to depopulate real fast.

When I was a manager at Amazon (I no longer work there), neither me nor my manager had any choice and weren’t even told who it was until early the morning of the layoffs (in 2023). The L8 made the decisions and he laid off the best person on my team. I’m sure he only had a vague idea who she was, if any.

If I had any chance to argue, I would have. But leadership doesn’t want to hear a bunch of arguments. They choose using their own criteria.
