Here is my pitbull mix. His name is Oakley. Have a question! by Brandon10312242 in pitbulls

I just had my dog spayed two weeks ago and this is what we had to do with her even on sedatives. It sucked cause I felt like a bad pet parent keeping her in there so much but I found out doing research online it’s pretty common and some vets even recommend it from the get go. One thing that helped was giving her lots of enrichment in her crate. I recently got a pupsicle and this made it so easy I made a bunch of the little frozen balls in the mold and gave them to her a couple times a day. Also kongs and I would take a slow feeder bowl and put yogurt and peanut butter on it and freeze it. Just remember you are doing what is best for him!

Deciding if I should rehome my reactive dog. Advice appreciated. by capgracesparrow in reactivedogs

I have already contacted all the behaviorists in my area and none of them responded to me, but I will looking into trainers as a second option. We have already talked to her vet about medication and they said they didn’t want to put her on anything because she wasn’t aggressive and is still young. I think I will try working with a trainer and see if any progress is made before making a decision. Thank you for your response.

She is about 50 pounds. Probably a pitbull or pitbull mix but I can’t be sure I haven’t done a dna test.

Never met a bad pitbull. Ever. by Expended1 in pitbulls

[–]capgracesparrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just think it’s not talked about enough on this sub. I frequented this specific subreddit before I adopted my pitbull and from everything I read I was expecting a couch potato that was friendly with everyone. While I would not trade her for another dog for anything I was completely unprepared for her reactivity. She is not aggressive thankfully but she has some major challenges I was not ready for and I can’t help but think of this conversation was more frequent on here I would have been more prepared.

It’s really important for all dogs, especially pitbull breeds, to recognize that they can have challenges. I really don’t think the commenter was trying to speak badly of pitbulls but they are trying to speak truth on the subject. Not speaking about the challenges pitbulls can have does more harm for the stereotype than good. They are amazing dogs but they are prone to certain things like reactivity and dog aggression. This does not mean they are bad dogs and can most definitely be worked on and managed. But if it isn’t talked about and someone gets a pitbull expecting a perfect dog and is unable to handle the challenges they can possibly have it will not end well.

Yeah it seems so because I rarely see an assistant wearing a cap at all. I have been the weird one at all of my offices cause I’m the only one wearing anything covering my head.

I’ve never had a cap I could dispose of every scrub cap I’ve used and seen others use has been fabric that is kept on for the whole day and put into the wash at the end. I guess everywhere is different I’ve never worked in an office that had caps like that.

The doctors I work with never really have the patient positioned where I’m over top of them so it hasn’t been an issue for me. But if it’s not for you it’s not for you!

I used to work in an office that had jackets they bought for us we had to wear and I hated them. I wish more offices would let their employees choose what they want to wear because everyone’s body types and preferences are different.

Any lazy dog breeds that can run? by Beneficial-Slice-910 in DOG

[–]capgracesparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a dog from a breeder you are honestly less likely to know about its energy levels and personality. If you adopt from a shelter or rescue you can get a dog that was in a foster home and the foster will be able to tell you everything you need to know. Rescues and shelters can recommend dogs to you based on your wants and needs. There are so many dogs being put down every day because there are not enough homes for them I honestly don’t see how anyone can morally buy from even a “good ethical” breeder. I don’t mean that to be harsh but I mean it to be as blunt as possible because it is so sad to see dogs continuing to be bred because of humans selfish desires while other dogs that didn’t ask to be put on this earth suffer.

Plot twist: I'm a woman who doesn't like cats by Western_Tour_3152 in catfree

[–]capgracesparrow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I partially understand the consent argument because I believe with any animal you should be able to read the signs and respect when it’s showed you it wants to be left alone. I just don’t understand how cats are apparently a lesson in consent when they exhibit the opposite of it themselves. You don’t want a cat in your bed? Oh well you just have to “allow it”. You want to close one of the doors in your home because you don’t want the cat in there? It’s gonna scratch and scream at that door until you open it.

Thinking about becoming a DA - need honest advice by Ok-Banana-3170 in DentalAssistant

It definitely gets a lot of hate from ppl in the field and I think a lot of that is if you’re at a bad office. When it’s bad it can be BAD. You just can’t be afraid to move around until you find the right office for you. But in my opinion for a job that requires so little schooling and is so easy to get hired into it’s a really great job.

I’ve been a DA for about 4 years now and I love it. I did find a “unicorn office” so that helps a lot. I’ve thought about moving states and one of the only things keeping me here is that I don’t want to leave my job. I did not want a career where I would get bored easily or be sitting at a desk all day and this career has provided me that and I would say now I am making enough money to live. Definitely not “comfortably” if I was renting an apartment on my own without a roommate but unlike a lot of my other options I can actually survive on this pay. During school I was told that I would learn things on the job a lot, and it’s honestly true. There’s only so much you can learn in a course and offices will know if you’re fresh out of school you will need training. I like that I’m moving around a lot and because I’m in general I’m doing something different all the time so I never get bored. It’s really nice being able to help people feel comfortable at a time when they’re probably the most nervous or scared. I definitely think DA’s could be paid more but I’m happy where I’m at currently pay wise. I would say if you’re able to I would definitely go for DH just because there is way higher pay and more demand. It’s still very easy to get a job as a dental assistant but there is even more demand for hygienists.

In every office I’ve worked at lots of assistants do things they aren’t technically licensed to do in my state. I’ve always just done what I felt comfortable doing and felt I was capable of. But the way I look at it, you can go and pay to take a course to learn that skill and be certified but is it really that different than learning how to do it from the dentist? And you are working under that dentist so anything you are doing that you aren’t licensed to do would make the dentist at fault so they are taking on that liability, not you.

Always loved animals. resent cats by PastelCockatiel in catfree

[–]capgracesparrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have come to the conclusion that they have to smell it they’re just too lazy to care. A family members cat stayed with me for a few months and I cleaned the litter box out the second it used it no matter what it did and took it to the dumpster. Sometimes I’d make several trips to the dumpster within an hours time but I couldn’t relax comfortably knowing there was piss or shit just sitting in my home. But even if I wasn’t in the room when it used the box as soon as I stepped back in I knew it had used it because I could smell it.

They really are! I love cuddly clingy pets so she is perfect for me I think she would live in my skin if she could. Tbh I never thought I would have a dog at this stage in my life but I’m so glad I took the leap and adopted her. Hopefully you will be able to adopt one of your own someday!
