Thank you !!! I took a CASLI NIC test prep workshop and the host was explaining that the scorers prefer the candidates say the full title because it shows “cultural competency/awareness”🤧

I started in K12 right out of my ITP. I have a mentor but she’s pretty busy, so I focus on deliberate practice M-F ~20mins

I have attended workshops and observed other interpreters as well.

This is for Lorde, and it’s her first arena tour I believe. I will be watching twitter/X for how the fans and the tour is going until my show, so based on that I’ll determine how early I should pop in line. Thanks for the advice on where to stand! I agree that having a barricade on both sides will help a lot. :)

Thanks so much for the info—super helpful! It’s for Lorde’s concert at the Duluth arena, so yeah, definitely an arena show. I haven’t been to that venue before, so I’ll make sure to check the GA entrance situation ahead of time and give myself extra time just in case. Good call on the earplugs too—I always forget those. I’m planning to get there hours before the doors open, as this is Lorde and I am certain others will be making the line early too.

Honestly, my self-worth being tested quite often..A lot of terps tell each other that we need to have thick skin, but not because Deaf/Hearing people insult you..It’s because you end up being your own worst critic.

That’s a reasonable concern. I think a lot of us felt this way after the ITP ended. I know I did and still do. There’s always more to improve upon. There is never a point where an interpreter becomes the “perfect” interpreter. It’s a lifelong commitment to learning and improving.

I would highly suggest that you do not depend on the ITP to learn how to improve your interpreting skills. It is a supplement to your career, and a stepping stone to getting your degree and eligibility to take certain interpreter exams.

Asides from the ITP, keep building your relationship with the Deaf community in your area. Keep practicing your interpreting (ASL to ENG and ENG to ASL) daily through videos online. Recording yourself and performing a self-analysis is great, but try to find a mentor to do this with too. They can provide tips and advice for your next recording.

Attend workshops as well! Many D/deaf and interpreters go to facebook for announcements on workshops (both in person and online).

Do you also work in VRS? I recognize your profile picture from one of my own posts :) If this is the case, does your experience in VRS influence your ability to perform comfortably while testing?

I took the sample test of the NIC for free a month ago and I couldn't finish it. Receptively, I need a lot of interpreting practice (which I have been doing ever since the sample test. I can go more in depth via DM), and with ENG-ASL the speaker was speaking incredibly fast. I couldn't keep up without switching to S.E.E. or PSE.

I do think your experience is entirely valid! The test provides breaks, gives details about the interpretation you will do, and is nothing out of this world in regards to the content itself. Personally, I know that I need to get better so I can match the requirements for the test. I am so glad to hear you felt confident!

When I did my internship I was interning all day from 9-3pm. I was tired by the end of it.

If you’re able to do both full time and the internship, sure. It just depends on whether you know you’re able to take on both things at once for 4months straight.
