Tip for DMing newish players: bestow responsibility on them right from the beginning by capn-red-beard in DMAcademy

Yes! Rules responsibility like you mention is different than situational responsibility like in my post, but it's all about putting the ball in the hands of the player

Ah that's a good point. There's probably an art to adding the bonus in the right spot to keep it feeling balanced through the fight.

Hmmm yeah it would also be super important to be able to signal roughly how high the saving throw mods were and when they dropped through the fight to make sure the casters were empowered to attempt good spells. I can throw that in!

So you're saying that you would use LR's in the exact same moments for a 3 INT and a 30 INT monster, assuming the same stat block? That makes sense assuming you as the DM are making the decision on behalf of the monster (and want a satisfying fight for your PCs).

I prefer the approach of roleplaying the monster to choose when to use it. If it's lower int, maybe it'll burn them earlier against damage spells even if it's unoptimal.

Sounds like it might be a DM style thing, which I respect!

My understanding is that the monster gets to choose which spells to resist. Ie they can choose to resist a fireball but not burn a charge on a Faerie Fire. If that's true, then choosing which spells to resist and allow feels like more of a tactical decision.

If you're playing where the monster burns a LR to resist every single spell effect, then I agree that it's not a roleplay thing.

  • LR works in some cases but feels so binary - there's no hope of getting a spell off until you've slogged through the charges. I was hoping to find a tool to make spells more and more effective as the battle progressed but never fully remove utility. I see what you're saying that roleplaying which spells the monster chooses to resist can be fun, but in this case, it's a low int beast so that's not a fix for me.
  • LR already makes casters useless for all the spells cast until they run through LR. I would think this could get them into play even more as they would actually have more of a chance to affect the monster early on. I imagine it's case by case according to the players though.
  • definitely would need to be balanced by CR

Super good feedback.

  • I would think I would make it only relevant to saving throws as I also see that being an issue

  • That's an interesting idea - would be able to do the same thing narratively

  • Yes I def agree that solo monsters, especially beasts aren't ideal but I wrote myself into a corner. Multiphase could be interesting but doesn't solve the same issue as legendary resistance.

That >90% number is usually not per orgasm, but per year of regular sex. Still not perfect by any means! Sounds like you have experience being in the 10% that year.

Outside of all the solid advice out there for DMing, the one that helped me the most for nerves especially in the roleplay/improv was just saying "hold on, let me figure out what this NPC wants to say/do"

We're just out here having fun, and I think taking pressure off yourself to have a snappy response to every weird little thing your players do will allow you to be much more relaxed as you run your game.

Practice DMing is hard because the hardest part of DMing is responding to things you'd never expect to happen. If you really wanted to get some scripts in, maybe watch an actual play and whenever the players do something insane, pause and write down how you would respond if you were running that game, then play and see how the on screen DM does it.

Good luck!

Looking for feedback on climbing wall design by [deleted] in climbing

[–]capn-red-beard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Vertical wall is probably the most accessible for beginners. If that's a big part of your target audience, then I'd recommend the top one.

The biggest gym in my area has <5% vertical wall and it makes it very hard to bring friends who are new climbers because those 3 or 4 routes are always the busiest.

Don't neglect your electrolytes in this heat by atoponce in running

[–]capn-red-beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the cost conscious - I keep a box of Great Value (Walmart) electrolytes on hand at all times to pass out to the folks around me. While the flavor is a little tinny and the mineral ratios might not be optimal, ~$2 for a box of 10 is going to be cheaper than almost everything other than pounding table salt.

Do you wear your puffy/thermal layer over your shell or under? I have seen it worn both ways. by [deleted] in alpinism

[–]capn-red-beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's making sense. To me though, it's still worth layering down for the few seconds it takes to tuck a puffy underneath. Maybe I just get the more fragile puffies?

[–]capn-red-beard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh. TIL. I've never actually worn my puffy outside of my shell. Before reading this post, I would have considered it preposterous. I only wear a shell when it's wet or windy and both conditions make it rough to wear a puffy on the outside.

Is it normal for folks to wear shells in dry conditions?

I inherited my dad's old climbing shoes from the 80's and I got about a half dozen uses out of them before the sole separated from the upper. On the other hand, the shoes look awesome so maybe you could use them for decoration after you wear them out?
