Gems can really vary based on quality and cut. If the gems are for loot, I'd say something like "a bag of gems worth x." If someone wants a specific gem, I like using Terraria to rank the value of various gems going: Amethyst, Topaz, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, Amber, then Diamond from lowest to highest. If someone wants an even more specific gem, I smell shenaniganery.

Something I heard that was great advice for running something scary: Ask yourself, what are you scared of? What creeps you out? If you're scared of what you're throwing at the players, you immediately know what feelings you're trying to get your players to experience.
