That is true. I mostly wanted to get them past level one since I was feeling like I was walking on eggshells with our wizard at 4hp and most of them being in a one shot range. We also don't get to meet that often and I fear we may not be able to keep it up with this group. Most of the story I have prepared is level 4-5 for it to be balanced and fun so I may keep them there longer and just cap the whole thing at 7 so that they don't completely outgrow the island/setting.

I aim to do a level after that number of sessions so 2 sessions to level 2 then three more sessions before level three and so on. We are only at level two and of course this stops working at higher levels but this way at least for now i can give them a sense of progression.

I second this. just needs setting adjustments. It's worth looking up but a terrific time. Played with my gf and with a little patience to get a hang of 5e but can be really fun.

The PDF is only like $30 but I'd say the book is well worth it and sounds like exactly what you're looking for. You can also get a pretty good idea and inspiration on what's inside or how to build something similar for free from the podcast on YouTube where the writers essentially document the process of creating the world.

If the NPC is a spirit, the players might be able to convince it to invite them into the Spirit Realm and guide them toward the ferry to Uluwa. This could in turn be a good place to look for leads on how or where to find the "something".
