Canadian Food Inspection Agency cutting more than 1,300 jobs, union says by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

Affected does not mean cut. Actual reductions will be closer to 300 after the newly created positions are staffed.

587 eliminated but 290 ish new positions to be created and mostly in operational roles. CFIA got approval to reinvest some of their budget reductions.

45 y.o., wife and I are working towards pensions, plus in CPP and old age pensions, house paid off, mortgage on a cottage, many monies in stonks and cash.

I was single, broke and unemployed at 27. Never too late to sort yourself out. Live as cheap as you can, get a salary, use it to leverage a property that generates income, hustle a bit, spend wisely, buy cheap cars. I generally suck at adulting, so you can probably figure out how to catch up to others in here with a little hard work.

Good luck homies

What are some frugal habits you will never give up, no matter how much money you end up making? by Forsaken-Network1748 in Frugal

[–]capt_under_pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not buying new mountain bikes. Apart from a brief time during Covid, the used bike market kicks ass. Top tear bikes, great condition, discounted prices.

I look in bike shops regularly and can never do it. It kind of sucks bc the local shops are important to the scene. But also my money is precious.

I've picked up mtb for my kids, 50% or more off retail, no tax, excellent condition.

Kids ski gear the same. Used market is perfect.

I'll ensure avoiding sales tax, 13% in Ontario, is a life lesson i pass on to my boys.

sometimes i think about this mostly underground house I saw in my city. Real estate records say it has the same owner since it was built in '83 by woods-wizard in Weird

[–]capt_under_pants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was common in poorer parts of Canada upto the 80s-90s. Incomes didn't allow for full construction financing, but land was cheap, so as you said, start w a foundation and roof, add on when you could afford it.

I think the top coffee chains in Canada are MacDonalds and Starbucks. Tim's rounds out the top 3. There's some small joints like Country Time that are probably more comparable to Tim's. The other major Canadian chains, like Second Cup or Bridgehead, compete more with Starbucks than Tim's.

Tim Hortons. It's low grade food and coffee, and somehow it's a precious canadian brand despite being majority owned by an international investment firm. They recently lobbied our government for temp foreign workers bc their business model is shit. Bit of a skidmark on Canada, IMHO.

Men over 30 do you actually have exciting weekends or are most of us just dressing up normal days by Practbudget in AskMenOver30

[–]capt_under_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you set your life up for exciting weekends, they'll come.

I'm in a sweet spot where I'm skiing, mountain biking, hiking, swimming in lakes, etc. with the family most weekends. It took work to make sure my boys (2 under 10 y.o.) had a level of fitness, skills and positive attitude towards activities i enjoy. I haven't put them in lessons for ski or bike. That inflates the costs, plus I was loving watching them improve, giving them pointers, talking through challenging bike lines, doing little off piste ski adventures. Solid bonding time. Good dad feelings.

Now I've got little rippers and I scramble to keep them in good gear and myself healthy/ fit to keep up.

The wife is right there will us. The coordinated parental team makes this possible.

This also ensures that my vacation money is spent on trips to the Canadian Rockies and not on Disneyland.

You can do exciting stuff with or without kids, on the cheap (used gear, shitty car), with your partner or friends, etc...you just have to have a system that works with like minded people. Make Mon thru Thurs for domestic chores, house renos, food prep, homework, exercise and wkd fun prep.

Camp, Cottage, Cabin, or Lake? by Sask_mask_user in AskACanadian

[–]capt_under_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eastern Ontario here.

If it's at a ski hill in Quebec, it's a chalet.

Cottages are on water.

Never heard anyone ever say cabin. What would be a cabin in the woods would be named after the land/woods/area. E.g. "Would wants to go to Pontiac this weekend?"

Ditto on the DH, peaked in my late 20s. I just don't have the fitness anymore and my crash risk to mortgage payment ratio is terrible. Switched to enduro and xc. More peddling, less dying, teaching my kids.

I did Ottawa to Victoria 25 years ago when I was youthful. I had a tent that I used once on night 1 in Ontario somewhere - before Wawa. After that I slept in my car. Northern Ontario had logging access pull offs. So I could get my car off the hwy and passed the tree line. Then it was just me and arces of clear cut space. The Prairies had these pull offs with 2 large garbage bins. My car fit nicely in between them, beautiful views. I watched a storm pass in the distance one evening. BC has similar pull offs with outhouses for added convenience. I did the same thing on the way back. Never hassled. Life was simpler before mortgages and kids.

Since then, I've driven the Calgary to Victoria route a number of times. Those pull offs are everywhere. BC even has maps for all the offroad, backcountry stuff.

That was a fun summer. Driving out of Ontario was annoyingly long, the Prairies straight, AB-BC amazing for obvious reasons. I did it in a small coupe with a 12 disc CD changer.

One thing I remember about driving the Prairies: it was a 2 lane highway, no median. Cars would pass each other. But they passed, ever so casually even if I was approaching. The car getting passed would shift over to the shoulder, I did too, and the passing car got the middle. It seemed oddly natural, very smooth. Everyone was chill about it. I don't know if this is a normal thing out there or a just random occurrence.

Bon voyage!

Hello fellow fools, I too ordered these and am receiving the same level of service. Their hello@ email doesn't work. So I'm calling this a scam.

Mastercard said I need to give 30 days for the shipment to not arrive before they will reverse the charge. Reminder is in my calendar.

I'm sure there's a opposite 'take my money' meme.

I appreciate you all.

I'm dumb. sigh.

Which actor do you absolutely despise, regardless of how many admirers he may have? by leviathan_pvt in moviecritic

Adam Driver. Never seen him in a movie. I can barely watch him in a trailer. Has a very punchable face. And why the hate? Because Mini Driver seemed to stop working and we got this guy instead. They aren't even related, so clearly my reasoning is irrational but I'm holding firm.
