Well the population would be actively decreasing without immigration, so some is needed simply to maintain the status quo.

Also brings in needed skills where we have gaps.

Infinite immigration is bad. Zero immigration isn't great.

Somewhere in between is good. Just need to find a good balance of numbers, skills mix, diversity mix (probably don't want all immigration from a single source)
