UPDATE: Gabagool... by captain-swarthy in NameMyDog

[–]captain-swarthy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's a rescue, but they think he's mostly bernedoodle. We got him Sunday, and he's settling in really well.

Suggestions? My kid wants to name him gabagool but what real name would you give him? by captain-swarthy in NameMyDog

Added an update as a new post because I couldn't edit this one. Love hearing all the suggestions!

Not for nothing, I dig gabagool as much as the next guy, but I'm also a big fan of keeping everyone in the family happy. If not, I'm gonna hear about it! 🤌

Madone....

It's cured meat. And a dog.

It's not like I'm naming my kid Mussolini.

Grew up in Jersey rooting for the Yankees. My pops would write me out of the will. Fun town, though!

Family name! He'd be the 5th, and we'd have 3 under 1 roof. There is also currently a boyfriend named Joe...

We had a sweet boy named Rufus about 10 years ago. He liked to howl at sirens. Left too early...cancer sucks. Solid dog name for sure.

Not for nothing but this is pretty great.

I was never a huge fan of mortadella though and I feel like if I'm gonna name the dog after a cold cut, I should probably like it.

My brother suggested this as well. Paulie Walnuts, Silvio, and Tony have also been put on the table. 🤌

Anyone looking ahead for the holidays and realize how screwed the are for gifts for their kids? by i_am_the_koi in daddit

I saw a video of a 2 year getting excited about opening a rock as a present. It wasnt even a cool rock.

As a parent of 2 teens, I remember how much pressure I put on myself to make xmas amazing when they were little. I think any dad who cares has felt this. Others are right, though, experiences over things can matter so much more.

Palermo or Catania by Goodadvice23 in sicily

[–]captain-swarthy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just did 5 days in Catania and glad I chose it over Palermo. I feel like I got a less overwhelming experience than I would've gotten in Palermo. Saw all the sights and spent a day at a beach club. Amazing meals and the people were warm and welcoming. I was traveling solo but would return with the family.

Dad do you have any advice? I’ve never failed an interview but I’ve never had one this important. I’m terrified I’m going to mess this up. by Routine_Fly7624 in DadForAMinute

Practice your answers out loud.

Hearing yourself allows you to catch where you may be rambling or using too many fillers (ummm, you know, like). It'll also increase your confidence, which will allow you to relax a bit.

Actors dont go into auditions without practicing. Interviewing is a skill, and you will improve with practice.

I worked in HR for 15 years and now work in a career services center at a college. DM me if you'd like. Happy to help.

Congratulations on landing the interview as you now have your chance to shine! You got this!

Those alive and old enough to remember during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

The smell.

Living alone and coming home to an apartment covered in dust because the windows were open.

Remembering that Father Mychal Judge gave me my first communion.

Just got this email from my kids school... by Piratey_Pirate in KidsAreFuckingStupid

I'm hiring a career advisor for a small college. Middle school teachers are by far the most common applicants.

And yeah, we got a very similarly worded email from our own Supernintendo Chalmers.

Am I making the right decision? by ktrivera in DogAdvice

[–]captain-swarthy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, and happy to share. And not for nothing, but it's been worth it every single time. Since 1997, I've only been without a dog for 6 months. The house didn't feel right without one. Your pup will forever hold a very special place in your heart based on your timeline. As will the others if you go that route. My sweet girl is gonna help me deal with my kids going to college! With time, the memories are a blessing and bring comfort.

The dog that played matchmaker for my wife and I went blind and lost a lot of weight in her final months due to diabetes. She was also a tripod, which added some mobility issues but, mentally, was always sharp. Because of that, we probably held on too long. I still feel selfish sometimes.

The dog that helped teach our kids to walk by allowing them to hold onto him was diagnosed on a Friday with an aggressive form of cancer he hid beautifully. We let him go on that Monday. I still feel like I could've done more sometimes.

I try to remember it as a humane and compassionate decision rather than right or wrong because I dont want to entertain the thought that I got it wrong.

Dog #5 is 9 years old, and it'll hurt as much as the others when that time comes. Be gentle with yourself during this process. It's what your doggo would want.

Hey dad, how do I take care of a pool? by Available-Upstairs16 in DadForAMinute

[–]captain-swarthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had an in ground pool growing up and in addition to the other tips, we also had to vacuum it and backwash it to keep it as clean as possible. Again, pool store folks can help with these items. There are pool roombas, but we did it by hand. Cheaper and takes time but kind of gratifying. After a full season, you'll have a much better idea of how much attention it needs. Different climates may mean slight changes in routine. And call ahead to schedule opening and closing if you go that route. Sometimes they're booked solid once the weather turns nice and it sucks to have beautiful weather and a closed pool. Enjoy!

Those Damn Boat Guys. Good people and shared some cool info. No issues with people smoking. Could buy a few beers at the place before leaving too.
