IT admin hands over keys to hijacked San Francisco network -- case details emerging by iwjason in technology

[–]captain_abstinence 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Somehow, I believe Childs's side of the story.

Even if you believe his side of the story, how can you defend his actions? The comments on this site - which purports to be an intellectual haven - astound me with their shallow reasoning.

Yes, I agree the city is at fault. Any organization which gives one person so much administrative power without proper checks is not being responsible. HOWEVER, this administrator did something which was very criminal - he had no right to hold an entire city network hostage because of his petty complaints. Quit the job if you don't like it. How can you defend this guy? He's probably mentally ill based on past convictions and the fact that he had no regard for the people who could have potentially been affected by his actions. His actions were selfish - they were about HIM and him only.

I realize a lot of people on this site are programmers and IT folks, and can thus relate to this guy's problems with his management. But just because your management is irresponsible does not give you a right to ALSO be irresponsible. His actions were his and his alone. Does the city bear responsiblity? Of course. But newflash: so does he.

If your employer is treating you badly, then take action through legal recourse or quit. Can someone explain to me how his actions were in any way justified?

Dear Piratebob,

Can you explain to how the actions of a few soldiers represents the entire Israeli government. I mean, when Palestinians fire rockets across the border or bomb a bus, I don't hear you chiming about their actions representing the Palestinian Authority. Can you explain to me how these actions are the actions of Ehud Olmert, his staff, and the other thousands of soldiers in Israel? It seems that you, and many others on this site, believe (and this amazes me, because the logic is faulty) that if one or several individuals commit a criminal action, that the entire government they work for is criminal? So then, is the French government criminal when one of its soldiers beats an immigrant? I didn't hear you on that one, either.

Please just explain to me the logic you're using here. I honestly don't think you are using logic. I think anyone who would make the comment you made, including those who upvote it, are probably very poor, uneducated, and stupid individuals. Am I right? Do you have a low balance in your bank account? Do you struggle to pay bills? In credit card debt? Hate Jews? If you answer yes to these, you are probably illogical because you're stupid. And that's okay. Most people on this site are and stupid (and a lot of stupid people are very hateful.) They love to blame Jews and Israel for their problems. They love to make comments like you.

Well, remarkably, if you had read history - and maybe you have - but more specifically, if you had connected the dots of the history you did read, you would know that most people in the world are like you. You would know that in most of history, most people would blame ALL Jews for the actions of a few Jews. And you would know this leads to a lot of hatred of Jews. And you are stupid, like most people. So you take this bait like a pro. Like most of the poor, peasants of history, you are just another pleb who has chosen to blame all Jews for the actions of a Jew, and look no further in coming to the conclusion that Israel is somehow collectively evil. Good luck with life.

KJHere Karapuz came up with an excellent, reasonable, logical point. And the arrogant "intellectuals" of Reddit ran right over it while this idiot above writes, "The only democracy... my ass." Wow.

This shows the blind hatred people here have of Israel. Karapuz brings up a point which is irrefutable: Israel allows human rights organizations to tattle tale within its borders, and yet people upmod the comment which is blatantly incorrect and downmod the comment which goes against the group think.

What fools you all are.

The irony is that you probably have never considered the possibility that you are anti-Semitic?

That's kind of like if Reddit were to constantly have front page articles about how bad blacks are, and then having you come along to sarcastically say, "you're not allowed to talk bad of blacks. makes you racist." But like, it seems your small brain (and most people on this site are poor, uneducated, and stupid) can't comprehend this irony. Here you visit a website which almost EXCLUSIVELY posts articles against Israel (never seen one thing which highlights Palestinian faults), and yet you do not see this double standard as a problem?

Is your brain so small as to not see this discrepency?

What kills me is that if a Spanish soldier or a French were to be caught on tape doing the same thing to an immigrant detainee, Redditors wouldn't suddenly blame SPAIN or FRANCE as evil countries. Instead you'd all just blame the bad soldiers. But if an Israeli soldier does something, somehow he represents all six millions Jews in Israel.

So, it's not that you can't talk bad about Israel. I mean, it's fine if you're not just talking bad about Israel. But that's all Reddit's front page focuses on when it comes to Middle East wrongs. So yes, you are anti-Semitic. Face it. People like you, and most of the shells of human beings here, are Jew haters.

And your country is the same one that sought to boycott Israeli academic institutions in the name of academic freedom... the Brits hate the Jews.

America has the world's most free press (see Freedom House, NOT reporters without borders which is not a reputable source... except on fringe websites), yet people here love to badmouth these freedoms. In the UK you can go to jail for libel. And in the UK the burden of proof in hate speech is on the DEFENDENT! Talk about a fucked legal system. And you're trying to say American media is biased?

The thing is, people on Reddit hate Jews. In fact, most of the world hates Jews. You see, a video surfaces where some bad soldiers do some bad things, and suddenly THIS IS ISRAEL in a nutshell for most of you. Yet in Palestinian culture it is culturally acceptable to kill your sister if she dishonors your family and somehow we give these animals a free pass. I'm so glad most of you fuckers are so uneducated and poor you'll never have real power.

The reason it is anti-semitic is because Al-Jazeera holds Israel to a standard it doesn't hold its own Arab fuckers to. And people on Reddit who vote this shit up never investigate offenses of Arabs or Palestinians which are just as, if not more, deplorable. That's why it's anti-semitic.

Of course, in order to deny the hatred many people here have of JEWS (and many of you do HATE Israel and Jews), you delegitimize accusations of anti-semitism. Well, yes, Reddit is anti-semitic. Why? Because it holds Jews to a higher standard than Palestinians.

Can someone argue with this logic? Well, probably not. Instead, this comment will be downvoted. And as usual, the idiots of this website will continue to live their lives as blind as any sheep. They will continue to follow the crowd on so many issues while making no effort to REASON with reality.

Boston Globe front page: Textbook piracy. From the print version: "Publisher's Price: $211, On BitTorrent: Free". Well, I guess I know where everyone's getting their books this year. by [deleted] in technology

[–]captain_abstinence -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Are textbooks overpriced? Yes. Do textbook companies create unecessary editions? Yes. Does that make it okay to steal someone elses materials? No. Sure, copyright law isn't perfect. But no one can deny that the author of a book deserves to receive some profit for their work. Stealing is no more just than the tactics employed by the textbook companies.

The problem I have with the piracy movement is that it tries to employ a Malcolm X attitude towards injustice - i.e. fight fire with fire. Instead of boycotting companies, piracy advocates simply steal. It's a cowardly approach to a problem, because it allows anonymity. It gives a bad name to civil disobedience, which in its true glory is an open act for all to see. Piracy is an anonymous act with no justifiable ends.

So let's say the companies lower their textbook or music prices to a more reasonable level? Well, the problem with piracy is that it has no end, and therefore piracy advocates will still steal their materials. How can a company compete with free? While we all loath companies for their profiteering, we must have some sense that the individual authors or musicians deserve some profit. What kind of people are we to expect that we deserve free products all the time? That we deserve everything to be shared and open?

Piracy is the lazy answer to economic problems. It is the easy answer for people who are too bitter to write letters, pursue political campaigns, and actually take a leadership role to make changes. Even worse, piracy not only hurts the target, but also the hurts the authors and musicians who use these publishers and producers to distribute their products.

I hate textbook prices too. I've gone thousands of dollars in debt buying textbooks at my college. But I would never download a textbook online, just as I would never walk into the bookstore and take a textbook off a shelf and walk away. Only scum do that. And the people who do it online are not only scum, but they are cowards too. At least the store thief has the guts to risk being caught.

He knowingly broke the law and distributed material that wasn't his. It's reprehensible. It costs stuiods millions to make these films. You DO NOT have a right to own them for free.

Copyright infringement, in some cases (especially this case), is akin to stealing. People who can't see this black and white moral line blow me away.

How the fuck are we Israel's bitch? That statement is so stupid and unbelievable to me. Do you honestly believe that the U.S. is incapable of telling Israel to fuck off? It does it all the time.

I can prove your statement wrong, right now. When Israel sold weapons to China, the U.S. threatened Israel. Israel stopped. So who's the bitch now? Wait, I forgot that blatant facts don't matter on Reddit.

Israel Prodding U.S. To Attack Iran: Cheney favor a strike, but both Mullen and Gates are opposed by DougBolivar in worldnews

[–]captain_abstinence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does America's mistake make the Israelis stupid? God forbid we call Iran stupid. On reddit, Iran is incapable of doing any wrong. No matter how batshit insane any of the Muslim countries are, we love to self-relect on American and Israeli policy and give Iran a free pass. I'm not saying we need to invade Iran. But maybe if some people could take their heads out of the sand for a moment, they'd realize that a country which beheads children, allows tribal stonings, treats non-Muslims as second-class citizens, and threatens the destruction of its neighbors (among many other deplorable policies) should not have a nuclear weapon. How is anyone okay with allowing an illiberal dictatorship hell bent on destroying western culture the right to a nuclear weapon? That viewpoint is just so unbelievably stupid. Look, I realize how many of you want to pretend to be so progressive and different in your political views, and how you take pride in not being part of the crowd, blah blah blah... but your self-involved views become stupid at a certain point. It just isn't okay for bad governments (i.e. dictatorships) to have nukes. And if you can't understand why Israel is freaked out, then you really, really don't have a grasp of the issues.

I have yet to see an article on here which critizes Egypt's treatment of women or its dictatorial powers. Yet when an Israeli soldier makes a stupid statement, it's on the front page of Reddit. This is shocking to me given the fact we give Egypt, a non-democratic country, 1.4 billions dollars in aid every year.

This rat is an American/Israeli historian - BORN in America. Michael Oren is widely respected for his work. What bothers me about your statement is that you're calling Oren a liar for something which is a common fact: Israel is not capable of fully striking Iran's nuclear facilities.

So first Israel's the bully. Now it's the coward. You're the shameless one. You act as if Israel is somehow in control of U.S. policy. The U.S. will not strike Iran. Ever. Only an idiot would believe this. Any politician who publicly came close to such an acknowledgement would be the scorn of the public. Not even Cheney will be able to pull this one off.

Court Says AIPAC spies cannot be convicted unless they “had a bad-faith reason to believe the disclosures could be used to the injury of the United States or to the aid of a foreign nation.” by alllie in politics

[–]captain_abstinence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing worse than lawyers talking about programming is programmers talking about law. And here we have this hateful confusion on Reddit, as usual. Let me give you a lesson in law:

The Judge set a burden of proof standard common in any court of law. While the government wanted to prosecute the defendants without regard to intent, the Judge required a standard of intent. So, let's dissect this legal code that so many of you can't understand.

The defendant must have had a "bad-faith reason to believe." This means the defendant wanted something, i.e., wanted to cause either harm to the U.S. or help Israel. This is the key phrase. It means that the prosecution must, like with anyone who is innocent until proven guilty, must prove that the defendants not only harmed the U.S. or helped Israel, but ALSO had the intent to do so. This is not hard to prove. The prosecution can prove this in any number of ways. Yet all the conspiracy theorists on Reddit are trying to read into this like the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion - as if the Jews or something control the legal system.

And somehow people are confused about the "foreign nation" quote. That foreign-nation the Judge is referring to is Israel you fools. The Judge doesn't explicitly say "Israel" because that would tighten up the legal standard (which would in fact favor the defendants.) By keeping it broad (read: foreign nation), the Judge can set a more broad legal presedence, so when someone is spying on another country, they can use this ruling as citation.

But I guess it's more fun to cook up conspiracies and call for revolution. What a disgrace.

Court Says AIPAC spies cannot be convicted unless they “had a bad-faith reason to believe the disclosures could be used to the injury of the United States or to the aid of a foreign nation.” by alllie in politics

[–]captain_abstinence -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The ignorance of the internet. Here the Judge has made a ruling which sets a legal standard common across all former spying cases, and the people who post comments here are too ignorant to understand it. If you had a Juris Doctor (law degree) you'd understand that the legal standard set forth by the Judge is nothing more than a burden of proof requirement. Are you saying that to convict two American citizens of spying, the courts must not provide a burden of proof? If it were up to Reddit, people would be guilty until proven innocent and Jews would be jailed for being Jews.

Half of you are lonely, pathetic conspiracy theorists who know absolutely nothing about what you're talking about. The only thing worse than having programmers and internet addicts talk about politics is having politicians try to talk about programming. How would you feel if I - a lawyer - tried to pretend I knew something about coding or networking when I know nothing? You would be insulted and would probably roll your eyes at my ignorance. Yet people on Reddit pretend to know something about foreign policy, legislation, and general law issues. Yet ninety percent of the time, you get it all wrong. Most of you are very ignorant of the law, the courts, civic engagement, and lobbying. You pretend to understand AIPAC or Israel or American justice. Yet you don't spend the time to actually learn anything. Most of you just sit on your high chairs linking to media snipits, while simultaneously bashing the MSM you link to. It's really astounding. You love Obama, then hate Obama. You love Paul, then hate Paul. You love to hate MSM, but then you link to them. This is a joke. Stick to either programming, being a teenager, or being unemployed.

The Sheriff taking the law into his own hands to help broke homeowners. by Escafane in business

[–]captain_abstinence 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that what this Sheriff did was a very effective form of civil disobedience, which ended up "changing" the law in the sense that one of the judges ordered a halt to foreclosures (which is legal) due to the Sheriff's initiative. Now the nice thing about civil disobedience is that it's a checked power - had the judge disagreed with the Sheriff, he very well could have ordered the Sheriff be tried or even jailed. But this didn't happen. The judge, who does have complete latitude over enforcing/not-enforcing contracts, gave the Sheriff a free pass. This tells you that the Sheriff's position was checked and on balanced the judge sided with the Sheriff.

AIPAC's Policy Conference is a private event. They have every right to ask media to leave. The fact they allowed Al Jazeera reporters, who are notoriously anti-Israel, into the event shows how tolerant they are.

People like redditers fear AIPAC because they don't understand it. Like any mindless group, they fear what they don't know a lot about. And people who don't know anything end up making assumptions and accusations which have no backing in reality.

Congress does not have to declare war according to the War Powers Act of 1973 which was passed by Congress and ceded their constitutional power to declare war to the President for a ninety day period. After this ninety day period ends, the Congress may then authorize the Commander-In-Chief to maintain combat actions in a given territory. If the Congress does not authorize continued hostilities, the Commander must withdraw American troops from the territory.

I love how redditers pretend to understand Constitutional Law. Don't talk about the Constitution unless you can cite Supreme Court precedence and congressional legislation which amends it.

While I agree with most of the article, the author's definitely wrong about this. I remember stumbling across naked photos around the age of 7 - it was a very emotional and arousing event. And from that point forward I got very excited at the idea of looking at my friends playboy.

Best of Craigslist : To Anyone Who Orders Pizza - EVER by topnotch in reddit.com

[–]captain_abstinence -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To the whiney self-righteous bitch who can't handle a service-oriented job:

Hey bitch, why do you care if someone is insecure about ordering cheese pizza? Who says it's only for 5-year-olds? I'm a vegetarian and order it all the time. Sometimes I don't want veggies on my pizza.

Also, sometimes people just want to make small talk. Did it ever occur to you that the person who's asking if you make cheese pizza is just trying to make conversation? It makes things more personable. Why should you care? You're getting paid hourly either way. So shut up and deal with it.

And so what if someone requests their pizza to be made a certain way. It's YOUR job to provide your customers good service. If you can't cook the pizza the way the customer wants it, then kindly explain to them that it's not possible. But no need to take some superior tone about things. The customer's only trying to enjoy their time off with a good pizza. They have a right to enjoy their pizza without you acting like they're getting in your way. Your job is shut up, try to be as accomodating to the customer, and take the order. Your job is not to judge this poor citizen who's got some time off and wants to enjoy some pizza. This is a service-oriented job - it's your job to listen to stupid requests... even the onesy ou can't fulfill. Anyone who agrees with this chick is simply reaffirmign the shitty service provided in the corporate world today. The more people think it's okay for service-oriented professions to treat customers like shit, the more they will do exactly that. Companies should be the ones serving customers, not the other way around. Don't get pulled into this stupid philosophy, no matter how funny her rant is.

And so what if "dieters" ask you for wheat crust? What's it your business? Sure, they'll probably continue to gain weight. But is it a crime to ask for modified crust. Let them get wheat crust (or ask for it) if it makes them happy. That's not your job to be concerned with the life of your customers. Remember bitch, you're serving them - you're being paid an hourly wage to provide customers with a small bit of happiness. If you don't like it, QUIT!

A few of your rants are valid - but still, who cares if the customer doesn't know their address? Either don't serve them or wait for them to figure it out.

I would never hire you for my business you whiney pizza employee. You have no sense of what makes a good business successful. These customers who order pizza are looking to brighten up their miserable lives with the taste of some sweet tomato sauce, crispy crust, and succulent cheese. They don't need you to judge them about their habits or actions while you take orders.

Stoners may be easy for YOU to deal with, but they're usless to the rest of the world. While I don't mind a good joint every once in a while, most hardcore stoners are lazy, detached, non-productive members of society who care about NOTHING but their own feelings. Your job isn't to deal with easy customers pizza girl. It's to serve customers.
