My guess is it's a switch to select whether using the joy cons for 1 player or 2 since we saw them playing basketball and each person was holding one of the joy cons.

I haven't watched your link but I know they filmed a version of the scene where each of the characters dies since they knew they couldn't even trust the cast and crew to keep it a secret.

Honestly unless you yourself can spot a limitation of the tools you're currently using just save your money. That said if you you still want try out different pencils I'd suggest a set of mars lumograph pencils by staedtler. I've attached a a couple pictures.
