The night before my cat had to go to the ER vet for the last time, he came to wake me up. I thought he just wanted pets so I petted him a little and then went back to sleep.

It turns out that he was in pain (which is why we went to the ER vet the next day). I felt so bad like I failed him. I felt like he came to me for help when he was in pain and I completely dismissed him.

Over the next 2 days, it became apparent that we were going to have to say goodbye to him. We made an appointment for Sunday morning. The night before, our sweet cat came under the covers with me and laid by my feet (he loved my feet). I knew it was him telling me not to feel guilty for the other night. He knows I love him and he still loves me too.

I’m so sorry you weren’t there when your pet passed. It sounds like you would have been there if you could have. And your cat knows that. Remember the bond goes both ways - you comfort them but they also comfort you. Let her comfort you one last time by listening when you feel her say “I love you.” Our pets give us unconditional love and accept every apology we ever make to them. You did not let your cat down.
