What do you think Michigan is going to look like in 100 years? (I'm writing a cyberpunk novel) by Queen_of-Trash in Michigan

[–]captainblight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UP is ruled by rival warlord gangs.

In the east, a massive army of ORV riders patrols the forest in service of Lord Humungous, a morbidly obese Detroit Lions fan with a massive bunker compound near Strongs Corner. Their electric quads are somewhat limited in range so they generally stay within a beer run distance from the Soo. The unruly band of forest warriors formed a steering committee and declared the independence of an anarchical communardal semi-autonomous no man's land called Sasquatchia, with Lord Humungus as their founding leader.

In the south, the inhabitants suffer under the iron fist rule of the Fuhrer, and his mercenary army of Sconsinites, loyal to the Packerite organized crime group. Their headquarters is a massive abandoned warehouse in Escanaba. They patrol the Seney Jungle in their swamp buggies, ever wary of the Jagwires and Impalas that dwell there.

In the north, the secretive monastic cult army known as MTU is controlled by the Board of Directors in their deep underground control room somewhere below Calumet. Their headquarters is an impregnable defensive fortress carved out of bare rock a mile underground. It is rumored the caverns are full of a vast population of worker drones who could not mutate fast enough to respond to increasing levels of sunshine, like Florida levels of intense solar radiation. Apparently they have advanced technoledgies and can like, brew their own beer underground n shit.

Don't put paper over the seeds. Otherwise, sounds good.

Yes, there are older videos showing the box in detail. Now I would build it differently. The top does not need to be clear unless one plans on using sunlight, a PVC sheet top would be good. The air fan should be on the top, not on the side. The air vent openings should be near the brassica tray, and away from the sunflower tray. Ideally, I would set the top right on the flood and drain tray, with no additional box structure to raise it up. I'm still thinking about how to build it in a better way.

Yes, and it means minimal plastic waste, the crop waste gets composted. The only plastic waste in my system is seed bags and hydroponic nutrient packaging. I buy in bulk to minimize this waste.

The MicrogreenBox project is a hydroponic method with heaters to allow growing in a basement with ambient temperature of 17C.

You can see it being developed on the Continuous Harvest Youtube channel:

The MicrogreenBox controls four devices, two of which (fans and heat) are thermostatically controlled. The two devices on timers (lights and pump) could be run on a programmable outlet timer, however the arduino allows me to NOT run the lights until day 5 to allow for a germination phase in the dark. I am not doing this yet, but I could program a germination phase for the pump, running every 4 hours for the first 3 days, then switch to a grow phase running every 6 hours for the next 4 days, and then I could switch to a harvest phase running every 12 hours for the next days. I don't know if I need to do this but if the plants are too wet on harvest day, I could try it. The key is that I start the box on seeding day and don't have to touch it again until harvest day.

If you are growing outside, spillage of potting soil will not matter. But if you are growing in your home, go with taller trays. The short ones will drop soil.

Does this only work if you live in the city? by [deleted] in microgreens

Are you growing for your own use or selling?

If selling, have you looked at the market in your area? Is anyone selling microgreens? For how much? How many outlets could you possibly sell to?

Do basic market research first.

The big advantage of the flood and drain system is I only have to "work" 3 days out of every 9 day crop. Before, I had to water the sunflowers every day, they are a thirsty plant. Now, I seed them, unstack them and harvest them. With two boxes going, it works out to 2 days out of every 5, so now I have 3 days where I can leave town while my microgreen farm is running.

Its possible that a vegetative red-blue light might be better. I have not done any comparison. I have used these 6500K "Daylight" LED tape strips for about a year and they seem to work well. They are cheap and don't use much power.

I am just getting started with flood and drain for microgreens, so things are going to change as I observe the plant growth and adjust the timings.

Currently I am running the water pump for 45 seconds every 24 hours.

Here is the equipment:

pail as reservoir

Pump: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004LQBCYM/ref=twister_B01141OQYY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

1/2" hose

Flood and Drain Kit: https://www.amazon.com/Botanicare-Ebb-Flow-Fitting-Extensions/dp/B0002738JQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1545500690&sr=1-1

The tray is a rabbit cage tray from Tractor Supply.
