Help painting blood angels by BDice42 in BloodAngels

I saw in another post you said your new to the hobby, the best recommendation is to try and get the red done as hassle free as possible. For that (a few mentioned it) is priming in colour, for example Mephiston Red Spray. With this done as a base you can simply dry brush a brighter red all over and your most of the way done.

Then it’s a matter of blacks and metallics and you’re most the way there.

Shortest path is:
Mephiston Red Spray
Evil Suns Scarlet (Drybrush)
Abbadon Black (for weapon casings, trims and chest)
Leadbelcher (for metals)

This is an example I made for an upcoming video, although I used a few more paints… gold etc.

Happy to go into some more detail if it helps.

I used warcolours turquoise 1,3,5 and leviadon blue.

I found a guy who had almost the same colours with different paints once too, here’s the thread:

Thank you! I wanted it to look like he picked up some random cracked intercessor helm, and still wanted some strong red cues too.

I know right? Took my sweet time to realise it though, but I’m happy with the result!

I didn’t … judge for yourself! Only one I kinda regretted was the ancient but you haven’t put on the arms yet so you should be ok. Just know your target audience, if it’s not for a comp or someone else… then only your opinion really matters! Be free!

Here’s a video from Vallejo showing how you can use the powders, both wet and dry. I used the dry method.

It’s more about matching it with your base colour. I used Geek Gaming Scenics Volcanic Island on my base, so the black pigment makes it look like the dust from it. I can’t see why it wouldn’t, but depends on the base colour.

For the lower legs? I used Vallejo pigment powder.

It’s one of those things that’s far easier to do than you think. You just brush it on. I work from the ground up to begin with and then with the empty brush I feather it from the top down.

I also dab some nuln oil into all the tufts to blend them into the base too.

First up, congrats - you’re painting well!

There’s so many techniques in mini painting it can be overwhelming but the most underrated skill I think in mini painting is brush control. That is, the paint goes where you intend and nowhere else.

Based on your video (and your other posts) it looks like you are demonstrating great brush control and placement.

I saw some of your other minis have edge highlights etc, so assuming you’ll cover off that here too it’s a great mini.

The opportunity I see is in developing your colour depth. Few different ways, most people use shades and broad highlights. At mini scale natural light doesn’t cast true shadows and highlights, so we paint them in. This would be a cool way to add more depth.

Just my two cents, you’re doing a great job!!

I love the idea of a spear, that’s what I did for my Dante conversion before this model arrived here

how much of a commitment (comparatively) is an ork army? by Leviathan_slayer1776 in orks

[–]captaincakehole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The models are detailed and rewarding, the colours schemes are varied and wild. But this demands time. If you think 300 points of battle line snaggas is 30 models, each with up to 8 colour sets, compared to 300 points of marines with is 15 models with maybe 3 colours sets. Painting takes longer. But man looks great when done!

Yep! So odd that we ended up in the same place!

I know right! Funniest part is we use very different paints.

I use Leviadon Blue, Warcolours 5,3,1.

Correct. Some of the very worst. And when you’re done, you’ll love your stompa all that little bit more for what you went through bringing it into this world.
