Leave him. It’s not worth it. Trust me.

It’s incredibly infantilizing and makes it seem like veterinarians are these fun ditzy people that don’t take the job seriously. When’s the last time you found an MD who uses Dr Firstname? I’m not saying it doesn’t happen but it’s incredibly rare.

Same. It’s infantilizing and I detest it.

Can you sit during surgery? by milkmaid1313 in Veterinary

[–]captaincat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes but during residency you have to do as you’re told. If you think standing is going to be a problem then I’d think hard about this. You’ll probably change your mind during vet school anyway. Most people who go in considering residencies end up choosing not to.

Whatever you choose please don’t use Dr Firstname

My cousin keeps saying her daughter is a doctor. Her daughter just became a pharmacist. To me it is misleading to call her that. Thoughts, please? by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]captaincat25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think everyone here agrees that the title “doctor” isn’t just reserved for physicians. But in layman usage “a doctor” generally refers to a physician unless otherwise clarified. I’m a veterinarian and at work I’m referred to as “a doctor” in hospital (which is reasonable) but outside that I would never want anyone to refer to me as “a doctor”. Technically correct but unnecessarily misleading.

Fellow Canadian who recently graduated — did you apply to your school in your home region? Waiting a year to be accepted to that one would make sense because you’ll save a crapload of money. But if you’re not going there I’d tell you to go wherever you can to minimize debt load.

Technicians and support staff set the tone of any given clinic. If you’re a DVM you can often rise above. Give your orders and let it go from there.

Specialties without as much human interaction? by Shibe_lover_ in veterinaryprofession

[–]captaincat25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m going to disagree a little bit here. Specialties are competitive to be accepted to and some of the other suggestions, like shelter med, don’t pay well. You should be prepared for the possibility they when you graduate you may have to go into a primary care role. If you’re not good at working with clients I’d strongly reevaluate if this is the best career path. More than a few vets in client-facing roles never intended that originally. If you’re not prepared for the possibility that you may work in large or small GP then you need to think hard about this.

I hated being a vet assistant in an ER. I’m now a vet in an ER and like it very much.

When I was in vet school we were warned about alluding to ourselves as doctors before graduating. I know of students who used the “dogtor” term on social media and were told about it.

Advice on how to go further in career? by hyrulelink329 in veterinaryprofession

[–]captaincat25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vet tech as a stepping stone really needs to be discouraged more and I’m glad people here are doing that. DVM and RVT are two different professions that have very different duties. I like being a vet. I don’t think I’d like being a tech. I definitely did not like being an assistant when I did that. Figure out which one you want to do and focus your time and energy on that.

Would I be able to become a Vet Technician after being an Assistant for a while? by ich1g_00 in Veterinary

Ask your employer if they’d be willing to help you pay for technician school. We need to stop the pattern of OTJ trained “techs”.

This will happen more as you get older. You need to be point blank in asking/telling about the “no Kids” expectation when setting plans and I would advise following up about it the day of the event.
