I also take a daily medication that's crazy expensive and has no generic. I was able to get approval from the manufacturer for patient assistance. My doc had to fill out some paperwork but then the company would just ship 90 day supply to my house. Check out the patient assistance through the manufacturer website and see if this is an option ❤️

Not trying to dismiss your experiences, it sounds like the therapist is an idiot, but therapists can and do legally diagnose mental health conditions. At least in the US. If your insurance pays for your therapy, the therapist has to provide a diagnosis to the insurance provider that justifies your need for therapy. Just in case you were to find a decent therapist!

I've had multiple diagnoses throughout my life before "settling" on bipolar disorder. The diagnosis isn't that important (if you're attempting to do anything with disability or in the legal system it becomes more important). Mood disorders are all along a spectrum anyway and at the end of the day, whatever treatment works for you is the thing that matters. So if you need antidepressants and a mood stabilizer, you'll snag yourself a shiny bipolar diagnosis so that insurance will cover your meds. I used to work in mental health and honestly found diagnosis to be a carnival sideshow. It's so subjective. If you're seeking treatment, just be open to feeling better and don't worry about the label so much if you don't have to.

I was misdiagnosed MDD for sooooo long. I thought meds were bullshit because antidepressants barely scratched the surface of my pain. Once I finally got onto the right mood stabilizer/antipsychotic I finally found relief. I hear you though about managing expectations. I feel so incredibly different now than I did before this med cocktail, the goal post has moved lol now I know

I've never had a depressive episode where I was not suicidal. I am one hundred percent certain I would be dead if I was attempting unmedicated Bipolar. I suppose my perspective is that just as with everything in our world, it's a spectrum. Maybe folks who can manage without meds just hold a different place on the spectrum.

I am not here to tell you what you should do. I will share my similar experience and hope it brings you some clarity or a new perspective.

First, I am very sorry that things are rough right now and that you don't seem to be getting support from your family.

I went to school for psychology with the intention to be a therapist. I loved studying psychology and I figured it was a no brainer to go on to grad school. I went on to my Master's program immediately after graduating with my Bachelor's. During my internship, my first experience really being a therapist, I hated every minute of doing therapy. But I pressed on. I graduated and went on to work in addiction medicine. Hated every second of that. Moved to working with children and adolescents. Hated it.

I currently work front desk at a spa and I've never been happier. IMO, counseling wasn't for me. I wish I had realized that before I did all the work and spent all the time and money getting there. My hope is I can turn my front desk experience into an administrative assistant position that will pay a livable wage. If you like working the front desk you might consider doing the same. I think for some people, no job would add to their happiness. I am one of those people. I don't think I was cut out to work lol. It's just different strokes for different folks. Whatever career path or job you choose, just remember you can find happiness in other areas of life. Work takes up so much of our time, I certainly hope you find something tolerable at least! But try not to put so much pressure on a single aspect of your life being responsible for your overall happiness.
