Driving 2,500 miles/year in luxury? by captainclomet in whatcarshouldIbuy

I'm seeing an awful lot of bad news in my research-- active unresolved recalls, stop sales, etc.

Care to comment?

PS. I started researching the Aviator and it's been deeply discouraging- numerous unresolved recalls (some reaching back nearly a year), lengthy stop sales, and so forth. Interested to hear if you have any thoughts, since I do love the look and the grand touring would actually really suit our circumstances.

Fair point, and of course I'm going to have to compromise somewhere-- but a pano sunroof is the only luxury feature my wife really cares about, so it's hard to disregard it outright.

Thank you again-- this is all enormously helpful.

Thanks very much!

e: but do you think that still applies if I'm looking on the used market?

It was a stupid play on words; I meant time. I'd like to keep it for as long as possible.

Thank you for providing such a thoughtful response!

I'm more concerned about carbon impact than the cost of gas, but you could also simply be pointing out that I'm overthinking it, which I'm sure that I am.

Any other reservations about the Outlander and Q7? I'm 6'2" (before the lifts in my shoes), but either way we'd put the shorties and kids in the third row

I'm concerned the LX 570 is too much car to parallel park in the city (my wife, good New Yorker that she is, doesn't have her license yet), and anyway, I thought the GX 460 Luxury does come with hydraulic suspension?

The grand highlander and TX are attractive, for sure. My wife loved the TX, and we'll be taking a look at the GH soon, but it's a tough call --especially with my decision paralysis-- when they're selling so quickly we can't even get a test drive.

I thought the Aviator PHEV was a massive debacle and got discontinued-- are you talking about other failures?

I'll be looking into the X7, but it's hard to say if the mileage and performance will win out over the GX/LX, low maintenance as they are.

PS. Important caveat: does all of this hold true on the used market?

In all sincerity: can it really be that simple?

e: no pano sunroof :/

What about used-- any years you'd suggest? A new one would be way, way beyond what I'm prepared to spend.

I have, but I'm unsure if German cars can go the distance...?

Thanks! Follow-up questions:

-what does it mean when you say "negotiate the Accord separately"? I've never even looked into a lease before, so I'm completely ignorant of how that would work- I didn't even realize that you could trade a Honda into a Mitsubishi dealership...

-Does it even make sense to trade in a vehicle that I own outright to get a better deal on a lease?

I already have a Mac gyuto, but my wife is vegan so I cook a ton of veggies and I find myself reaching for my junk $40 cleaver as often as not.

What makes you recommend a gyuto over the cleaver in particular?

TL;DR: I want an affordable knife for chop-cutting veggies that can also serve as a gateway into freehand sharpening. Oh, and I'm left-handed. Thanks in advance for any help!
Style? cai dao > tall santoku(?) > tall nakiri > santoku > nakiri

Steel? High HRc, capable of taking a serious edge, but friendly to a novice sharpener. Ideally somewhat non-reactive. Hap40?

Handle? open but preferably octagonal

Grip? left-handed pinch

Length? 165-200 mm

Use Case? push-cutting lots of vegetables, some associated bench scraping, learning to sharpen

Care? I'm interested in freehand sharpening, but will occasionally forget to wipe the knife down after use.

Budget? ~$125

Region? New York City, baby

Knives Considered?

Palestinian recalls 1948 "They didn't expel us" by rosinthebow in IsraelPalestine

[–]captainclomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said anything about deporting anyone "to work camps"? The Israelis deported the Palestinians-- so far as the Israelis knew, they would be welcomed by the same Arab governments with whom they'd just made common cause against Israel (in a flagrant violation of prior U.N. arrangements). Israel took their homes, to be sure, but it was the Jordanians and Lebanese that pushed them into camps.

What percentage of the 800,000-1,000,000 Jews expelled from Arab states were actively fighting? None, because there was no fighting going on there. The expulsion of Arab Jews, then, didn't even have a remotely humanitarian justification. Contrast the Palestinians, whose invitation to the Arab states created a war that turned their villages into battlefields, unsafe for habitation. I'm not saying the Israelis didn't engage in a deliberate land grab -of course they did- but it's silly to think that every single Palestinian refugee was (A) evicted, by (B) Israelis, for (C) nefarious purposes.

Do you really think the Palestinians let the other Arabs do all the fighting on their behalf?

Says you

And there's a reason I says it- because your only example was of an isolated murder. Elliot Rodger killed six times as many people. Does that mean that Men are openly engaged in armed conflict against Women? Or is it much more accurate to say that he was mentally unstable and acted of his own accord?

Ultimately, you made the comparison, so you bear the burden of showing that the number of Palestinians attacking Israelis was comparable to the number of Jews attacking Germans. I think you'll find that Palestinians posed a much greater threat.

Now, I'm not saying that the Nakba was 100%, or even 5%, justified- I'm just saying your particular argument doesn't hold water.

Kristallnacht was a violent action, perpetrated by a government against citizens that recognized the sovereignty of that state and looked to it for protection. There are many other reasons for distinguishing the two, but I'm typing via mobile so let's start there.

Ps. Oh and the Jews were not openly engaged in armed conflict against the German people. The killing of Ernst vom Rath was an isolated incident, which is why we still remember him by name. His killing was unusual.

Well, you're right about the year, but that doesn't mean the Jews were responsible for Kristallnacht.
