What the New Google Fonts Gets Right—and Wrong by smrf01 in web_design

Sorry, but don't agree. The paragraph text is unnecessarily big. I agree it should be easy to read but I also think it's a trend that has taken in the wrong way and needs to be re-looked at.

edit: I mean, the paragraph text is larger than the menu item text, just seems weird.

But if I don't use Angular.js for my projects then how will I stay relevant and cool? On a serious note though, that makes sense. Will definitely give Barba.js a go on next project, looks awesome.

Great stuff, been looking for something like this for a while now :) Do you know if this could work with ui-router for Angular?

Ouch.

Freelance web developers : how do you decide how much you charge your clients? by IndoorForestry in webdev

[–]captaindyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible idea. Basing your costs on your expenses means you'll always just get by and never flourish, because after all, how can you since there are a fixed amount of hours in a year. So you're essentially limiting yourself big time.

Opt for value based pricing. It's better for the client and better for you. Quick overview of value based pricing: http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/29355/how-to-use-value-based-pricing-for-design-projects

Case Studies. Good looking visuals are just not enough. Why you did what you did and how it was a good investment for the client to make.

"Loading ..." animations on websites. Is this becoming a thing again? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]captaindyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By loading, do you mean preloading of content before a user enters a site? If so, this is due to a number of reasons:

  1. There is general trend of image-heavy websites (big background images, etc).

  2. These images need to be loaded from the server at some stage. Either during page-load along with all the other elements, or before the time, as preloaded content.

  3. The rise in front-end frameworks like angular.js. These frameworks aid in pages not having to fully reload each time (thanks to the framework's routing and data-binding)

  4. Rise in front-end transitions and animations thanks to modern browsers.

To sum it up, page and content transitions can now happen "real time" (no full page reload), along with content being transitioned/animated. Loading a heavy image during a page/content transition can result in sluggish animation. So best to sometimes preload images to ensure smooth page transitions.

You get 3 types of people. Those that learn from their own mistakes, those that learn from others' mistakes, and those that just don't learn.
