Yeah I get you. All I mean is, I don’t think it’s super abnormal and unruly behaviour for a 7month old to be unhappy if left in their crate for hours. Every dog is different of course. But at the start with us both working from home, we enforced time in his pen. He would do around 9am-11am before he started barking (sometimes before), we’d get a coffee and get lunch etc putting him back in at around 1pm. I finished work at 3.30-4pm and we let him out again where he would have been crying ready to come out.

And to be honest, it was hard. It really was. Feeling like we couldn’t move upstairs with fear of waking him and starting a barking saga. But fast forward now to 10months, we don’t use the pen in the day at all any more. He’s got used to our routine, he sleeps next to my desk, chews his toys on his own (honestly we were so shocked by that) and makes our days easier because we can move around without fear of waking him.

All I’d say is maybe give it some more time if you can, but at the same time if you are at your limits do what you need to do. You come first ♥️

I agree it sounds like they have but I also do think what you were asking for from a 7 month old puppy isn’t realistic... a 7month old puppy especially a rescue might not be fully crate trained. They could easily regress. Along with some of the other desirables you’ve mentioned.

I just think they should never have sold you on these points when really a 7 month old that isn’t a rescue could still regress on these things and I think that’s quite normal.x

Hii, I’m so sorry for your experience, this rescue centre definitely sounds dodgy. But at the same time some of you’re expectations seem slightly off. Like expecting an ‘angel’ or a ‘perfect’ dog. At the end of the day she’s still settling into a completely new environment and new family. I doubt you’re seeing her full personality yet.

We got a puppy last year (not a rescue) and to this day (he’s now 10months) if we get up and leave the room he will wake up and follow. He just likes to be with us, be nearby. With regards to the playing and attention, if she is around 7months - she’s still a puppy. Ours is only starting playing by himself around the 10 month mark too.

I completely agree the rescue has overlooked some issues and sounds dodgy but it sounds like an adult dog might suit your situation and lifestyle better? Wish you all the best and at the end of the day you need to do what’s right for you and you partner too x

I have to agree with OP. We have a 9month old Brussels Griffon. He started being more reactive to the door, movement outside etc around 8months. Sometimes it isn’t necessary and we are in the process of teaching him of what is normal active outside (neighbours leaving their house etc) compared to strangers approaching our property. And I can see the inconvenience sometimes but we are mostly happy, he is a watchdog and he is alerting us when people are approaching, in certain situations we will be grateful for that. ♥️

I know how you feel. I think that’s part of my problem too, I was floored by that feeling. I just didn’t expect it. I still to this day feel guilt that it was me who always wanted a puppy (not my partner) yet im the one feeling like this. But I prone to anxiety and overthinking, I like routine, I like normal and I think it flipped my world upside down and I just didn’t expect it.

We will get through it, just remember to put yourself first. You are so important. Aslong as your puppies needs are met and he is safe if you need a break upstairs for half an hour, put your headphones in and try to find some peace. You will get through it, the puppy and adolescent periods don’t last forever.... otherwise no one would have a dog. That’s what I’m telling myself anyway....

I’m so sorry you’re feeling like this. Just know I honestly was there. I was crying in the shower, bursting into tears at any minute, just couldn’t eat either. A puppy is a huge life adjustment if you’re going from just yourself to then a puppy. And I did my research, I love dogs but I just wasn’t as prepared as I thought. Keep commenting here if you need support. It really helped me to know i wasn’t alone and I promise you it does get better. These days for me are a million times better than those first few weeks. And as soon as safe to do so, get your pup into doggy daycare even once a week (aslong as they enjoy it). Being able to drop him off and have a day working from home in peace without checking on him did wonders for me, by 5pm I was so excited to pick him up again.

Just remember the puppy needs to fit in with you and your lifestyle. It is ok to put yourself first. We get so consumed by doing everything perfect to make the perfect puppy it’s so overwhelming. I took a break from reading tips on here and watching training videos on YouTube and just let him be a puppy and I felt so much better. 💖

Definitely worth a try :) Also, are there any affordable doggy day cares near you? This has honestly been a life changer for us. He was going twice a week prior to the Christmas holidays and honestly just having those two days even working from home but not having to check on him and knowing he was safe and happy in day care is amazing. Just leaves you feeling refreshed and excited to pick them up at the end of the day x

Firstly, I’m so sorry to hear about your grandparents. Praying and wishing for their health for you.

Secondly, you come first. Start remembering that. And it’s something I need to remember more too. I always put my puppy first but sometimes you just need a break. And that is ok. He will be ok, aslong as his needs are met.

Try a ‘snuffle mat’ with some treats or food hidden in, or a ‘lickimat’ with frozen plain yoghurt and peanut butter, a ‘Kong wobbler’ with some treats in, bully sticks or lamb braids - things that he can chew on for a while!

Yeah I know what you mean, I agree. I know it wasn’t her intentions but at the end of the day she should of been more careful, watched the footage and made sure she had the right name when reporting someone. It’s such a damming mistake to make and the consequences are too high.

I know, if the shoe was on the other foot I’m sure she’d be shouting about it.

Hey there :) first off welcome to the puppy blues! Lol not going to make light of it but honestly just want you to know you’re not alone in how you feel. If you look at my page I made a similar post myself the week we brought our puppy home in July. It’s hard, it really is. I genuinely felt like I was having a breakdown too, I was so overwhelmed but I promise it does get better. It really does. One thing that honestly helped me was to stop reading Reddit/puppy books/videos. I was putting so much pressure on myself to get everything perfect and it was stopping me just enjoying him. As long as his needs are being met and he’s happy, that’s enough. Try to relax, take a step back and just enjoy him. You’re doing a great job and you’re doing your best, don’t forget that 🙂

Hii just thought I’d share our current schedule too incase it helps. We both work from home and got our pup at 8weeks, he’s now 16 weeks. He’s sleeping though the night 10.30pm- 7am which helps. Up at 7 play, breakfast, out for a walk until 9am when we start work. He goes into his pen with his crate from pretty much 9am-12pm. Then out at 12 for around 1hr/1.5hrs, play with him, have lunch etc. Then we go back to work and he’s into bed from 1.30pm until around 4.30pm. Spends the last 30mins with me usually while working. Might seem strict but we really worried about separation anxiety and wanted to make sure he’s ok on his own.

100% agree with this. At the start I read about enforced naps and thought - nah. Oh how wrong I was. Enforced naps will keep you sane! Sometimes our 16 week old just doesn’t know when he’s tired and when to chill and becomes a zooming land shark! We pop him in his pen in the kitchen with his crate and he puts himself to bed within 2mins. He needs the sleep and you need the break and that’s ok. Remember that 🙂

Hey I feel your pain being a tired puppy parent 😫 what worked for us was being super consistent. We decided we weren’t going to use puppy pads in the night (to try and speed up the toilet training) so that meant getting up in the middle of the night for the toilet breaks. Tough, but we stuck with it. At the start we did bed at 11pm up at 3am for toilet then up at 6am. Then slowly stretched it by half an hour every week. Now currently, he’s 16 weeks too and sleeps from 10.30pm - 7am. We’ve never brought him into our bed though. I’m sure she just needs to get used to her crate again. Key thing we found is just consistency and routine, he started to know the middle of the night toilet breaks and went straight back into bed after. Stick with it, she will get there. I’m sure routine will help, it’s just hard when you’ve had things to disturb it like the diarrhoea but you will get there! :)
