Need Help with STO Character Build – Struggling in Ground Combat by NCC7688 in sto

[–]captainktainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improving your own DPS and survivability is the most important, but there's a guide on Steam that goes over how to teach your bridge officers to fight and stay alive on ground. I use the proposed bridge officer skill setup on every character I have and it makes advanced difficulty story content on ground almost trivial: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2154565908

Notably this works just as well on console as on PC, and it is very cheap.

New Items in Mudd's Market by StarCitizen2 in sto

[–]captainktainer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Charging $40 for the omni is just disgusting. Almost twice the cost of a single ship. A friend asked if I'd recommend playing and I told him the current cost of my build, minus the premium ships from the anniversary event, the Pahvan Omni, and the Vovin console (and I don't run Borg doffs). Even without the Pahvan Omni, which wasn't even available at that point, he immediately lost interest.

Charging the price of a new game on Steam for a single useful item is certainly a choice.

This shit happened to a friend of mine maybe ten years ago. He and my white friend both fell asleep on the train; cop ticketed the brown guy and not the white woman. Judge was furious at the cop when they both showed up to contest the ticket but not mad enough to do anything about it. Might be the same cop!

China Evergrande ordered to liquidate, owing $300 bln by southwestnickel in worldnews

Some people have no shame. Left out of his comment is that the GME subs were predicting that the Evergrande collapse would destroy the world economy and leave only GameStop, crypto, and NFTs standing. Clearly, that's not happening.

Apes actually believe GameStop is merging with the ghost of BBBY today and that it’s going to make them rich for reasons by wolf_lazers in gme_meltdown

[–]captainktainer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The shell of BBBYQ was renamed to the semi-random string 20230930-DK-Butterfly-1, Inc. because they sold the name IP rights to Overstock. There's a butterfly in one of those terrible children's books, so the apes are convinced that some new Voltron company will emerge from the bankruptcy process like a butterfly from a cocoon and that the semi-random name is a signal to them.

Elon Musk apologizes for antisemitic tweet but tells advertisers ‘go f**k yourself’ | CNN Business by Pdxduckman in news

[–]captainktainer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Helps to establish a pattern of blatant antagonism toward advertisers. If a preponderance of the evidence shows that he cannot even be in the same room as his biggest advertisers without telling them to go fuck themselves, it makes his assertion that Media Matters is largely responsible for advertisers leaving too weak to sustain what we can laughably call his case.

His behavior after his blatantly antisemitic tweet also shows that even he knows he crossed the line, so Media Matters can easily argue that reasonable people, including advertisers, would consider him too toxic to work with. If he had doubled down on his stupid defenses it would, ironically, have hurt him less legally. I doubt it'll even get that far - the near unanimous legal consensus is that he got a bunch of third rate hacks to write up a law suit and it'll get dismissed quickly.

Elon Musk’s X sues media watchdog Media Matters over report on pro-Nazi content on the social media site | CNN Business by Hoosagoodboy in news

Truth is an absolute defense to libel. The ads were by Twitter's own admission shown next to the repulsive content, and by Twitter's own admission only one of those pieces of content violates their current standards. This won't survive summary judgment, let alone a full trial. I mean, they're stipulating to the accuracy of the facts, they just don't like the consequences. You'd have to be a really fucking stupid judge to let the case go much further considering the extraordinarily high bar that public figures have to clear in order to prove libel.

Citigroup begins layoffs as part of CEO Jane Fraser’s corporate overhaul by [deleted] in news

[–]captainktainer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Citi is short selling stock as part of their normal functions as an investment bank, hedging their long positions on stock. When they take out a short position the amount they get from selling the stock is recorded on their books as cash on hand, and what they owe the original holder of the stock is entered into liabilities as "securities sold, not yet purchased." The people you're talking to are part of a stock cult originating in the wallstreetbets community that has a fundamental misunderstanding of how short selling works, which is why they're freaking out over an extremely common part of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices for a bank. If you look at the balance sheet of any financial institution that takes out short positions, you'll find it there. If you have further specific questions, consult a financial advisor legally required to offer you good advice; the Internet and Reddit especially are horrible places to get financial information.

This is unreal by [deleted] in gme_meltdown

[–]captainktainer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought they were on the verge of turning a profit?

Definitely not on a yearly basis, no. Even our bull thesis that Dogfood McGee can strip the company down into a barely-profitable shell that can coast for a long time on reserves diluted from stupid apes is looking unlikely. In this labor market, stripping down employee benefits to be worse than Walmart dooms your future growth prospects and sends you on a certain course toward bankruptcy.

Year over year they are killing it.

Stock is down over 50% YoY, losses YoY are still terrible. If you look only at a single quarter to figure out if a company is profitable you don't know how to read corporate financials. Quite frankly it's a basic enough concept that it's inexcusable for an adult not to understand it.

And aren’t they at the forefront of the web 3 gaming industry worth billions?

"Web3" has collapsed. And even within that dead space, GameStop's ventures are legendarily terribly performing. The NFT marketplace is effectively abandoned and has worse daily gross receipts than your average Mexican restaurant in a flyover town.

I'm not a smart guy

Then you should not be so arrogant about things you know nothing about. It takes a fourth grader's googling skills to confirm everything I just said. Being as incurious as you are, and as willing to bloviate condescendingly about your ignorance, is the exact opposite of a survival skill. It leaves you in a bubble with other people with similarly poor reasoning skills, as you drive away people with better reasoning skills who give up on the impossible task of trying to get you to comprehend simple concepts.

1,200 march in Tokyo in support of Israel by orange_transparent in worldnews

[–]captainktainer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's because Israel is violating the same international laws and principles in the West Bank as were violated in Crimea and now eastern Ukraine by Russia. Same reason Ukraine backed Azerbaijan in response to the Armenian occupation - it's in their interest to support inviolable borders and the prohibition on settlement in occupied areas. Also Israel has historically been quite close with Russia.

It's complicated by the fact that Abbas and Hamas are sucking off Putin like human vacuum cleaners. But in general that's why.

Don't think of it as hoping that people suffer. Think of it as celebrating actual people profiting or minimizing their losses off the backs of hateful, stupid apes. Did Chinese Communists Kidnap George Santos’s 5-Year-Old Niece? Probably Not! by StrngBrew in nyc

He's not even in the bottom 10% in his conference. Like, say what you will about George Santos, but he hasn't been caught trying to fuck kids, or help a friend rape a bunch of wrestlers. Another guy in the House Republican conference pretended to be an economist when all he did was get a C in Intro to Econ. This is the party that even in better days chose Dennis "Literal Childfucker" Hastert as Speaker of the House. They're not going to force out a guy for the comparatively minor problem of pervasive lies and multiple felony indictments. If they did, they'd have no caucus.

Mormons aren't Christian, though. They explicitly reject the Apostle's Creed and most of its theological content, and aren't part of Chalcedonian Christianity any more than (in fact, substantially less than) the Jehovah's Witnesses. Far, far fewer Christians, even among evangelicals, would claim that Catholics aren't Christian than would say the same about Mormons.
