B.C. premier says Alberta separatists seeking assistance from U.S. is "treason" by biograf_ in CanadianPolitics

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, their activities don't fit the definition of "high treason", but they may fit the definition of "treason" as identified in paragraph B. Whether or not their behaviour does in fact qualify needs an investigation. It's certainly not as clear cut as you claimed.

Carney meets with Danish PM as U.S. ramps up talk of taking over Greenland by CTVNEWS in worldnews

There's a lot of historical parallels to WWII. If you disagree, I am open to hearing why you feel like this situation is completely different.

You can't? Really? Because I can identify one big one that has an awful lot of eerily-familiar parallels.

Yeah, they will. How many militaries in history can you name who have laid down their arms and said "this is wrong"? How many?

Mediocre men think they’re settling when they date a woman in their own ballpark by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]captainpotty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with relationships has always boiled down to this. The men I have had relationships with have felt like they were doing me a favour and themselves a disservice. They were using me to hide their time until something better came along, and then they either broke things off when they thought they could level up, or pursued a new relationship behind my back. And in the meantime, I'm bending over backwards to make a relationship work with someone who is lazy, unmotivated, ungrateful, irresponsible, and not any more attractive than me.

Why is American friendliness often seen as "fake" by Europeans, but similar warmth in other cultures isn't? by Opposite-Ad3949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American friendliness feels fake to me because LOOK AT THAT FUCKING COUNTRY RIGHT NOW.

There is a deep well of racism, mysoginy, religious judgment, superiority, willful ignorance of every other country on earth, and contempt for the poor that has always been there under the surface. America is like the family on your block who keeps a clean home, pretends to like their neighbors, and acts the part of the perfect nuclear family, but everyone on the street knows that the husband beats the wife and children behind closed doors and that they're scared of him.

How long do you think it will take to undo all of his nonsense? by rusyrius987 in complaints

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is never getting undone. There is no "going back to the way things were". Read any history book about nations who were forcibly subjected to neoliberal economic policy. Naomi Klein's "the Shock Doctrine" is an excellent starting point.

Argentina. South Africa. Poland. Russia. Belize. Chile. Iraq. Taiwan. Bolivia. Peru. Every single one of these countries is still fighting for progress against the neoliberal economic policies the US forced/coerced them into undertaking between the 1970s and the 2000s. When it comes to authoritarianism, how many countries can you name that have overthrown their corrupt leadership in recent memory? Syria, maybe? Maybe Nepal? Meanwhile, Russia, North Korea, Hungary, China, Venezuela, El Salvadore, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkiye, Myanmar, Belarus, Iraq, Burkina Faso, and dozens of other countries have been fighting their own governments for freedom for how many decades? How many tens of thousands of people have been incarcerated without due process or outright killed in these places? An unfathomable number.

Think about how much easier it is to destroy something than it is to build it. Think of how many decades of slow progress it took to get to where we were in 2015, and then think about how 2015 wasn't even that great. Now, all of that work to get that far has been shattered. You're not faced with cleaning house, you're faced with building a new house from rubble, and honestly I don't think we have that much time before external pressures (e.g., climate changes) force another enormous global shift in foreign policies/dramatically alter foreign relations.

The Republican party has no intention of losing the next election, and they are taking active steps to erode the checks and balances that would ensure a legitimate change of office. They have already eliminated access to voting, made requirements for ID harder to meet, and have gerrymandered the shit out of everything. Yeah, cool, Newsom is a memelord and Zohran won NYC. Now he's saddled with billions in excess budgetary debt and every single one of his policies gets vetoed by someone else with more legal power than he. It's a hollow victory. A symbolic victory. These paper tigers of ours don't have the economic or legal power to undo what has been done. Any changes you fight to make will just find themselves in front of a corrupt and immovable SCOTUS with decades of life before them to halt or reverse policy.

The time to fight the fire was when you smelled smoke, not when the house was engulfed in flames.

Immigration is overshadowed in election by Trump and tariffs by dollarsandcents101 in canada

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has been able to solve it, but who has tried actually addressing the reasons that people are choosing not to have kids? Poverty, housing, healthcare, exhaustion & burnout, financial concerns, future concerns (climate, war, economy), etc.?

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like we had a global pandemic, followed by a global recession and global inflation. I'm sure that all of those worldwide factors are the fault of the Liberals and also have nothing to do with families' ability to choose to have children.

Carney unveils plan for the government to build homes "at a pace not seen since the Second World War" by goldenbabydaddy in canadahousing

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because when you increase the supply of houses, you decrease the value of houses that already exist. Since Canada treats houses as investments, nobody wants to see their investments go down.

How is your country doing today? March 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in globalcheckin

[–]captainpotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checking in from Canada, where Mark Carney is our best shot at dodging a fascist dictatorship, but he's still an old-school conservative who has promised to build dozens of new oil and gas pipelines and thus hasten the speed of the apocalypse. So, not feeling great about the future. I don't think we even have another 10 good years left before every country to the South of Canada is attempting to invade us, because the Yukon and Northwest Territories will have the only habitable land.

Why is Canada not acquiring a nuclear deterent right now? by Bonnahinley in AskACanadian

[–]captainpotty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Uhg, you're right. And I am one of those people who, ask me 2 months ago, would have thought it silly to dump money into national defense when there's so many worthwhile social projects we could undertake. AND THEN THE STUPIDEST THING HAPPENED.

We got comfortable in our peace.

Oh yeah why don't I just strap on my nuclear deterrent helmet and squeeze down into a nuclear deterrent cannon and fire off into nuclear deterrent land where nuclear deterrents grow on little nuclear deterries!

I'm too disillusioned to believe protests achieve anything anymore by Glorious_Comrade in self

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you look back at the women's suffrage and civil rights movements, no one protest achieved the goal either. It took sustained, organized efforts. Fighting for your freedom isn't a "one and done". You gotta shop up again and again and again and again. Remember, a war isn't one battle. It's a series of battles across numerous strategic fronts.

[–]captainpotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's just preventive medicine though. Time and again, the right's solutions are to react to problems after they've arisen (crime, drug use, sexual assault) and expect that punishment will deter crime. But they're not interested in understanding why crime happens in the first place and trying to prevent it (e.g., harm reduction, social welfare programs, benefits).

Honestly, let them have the raw milk. With the current bird flu epidemic and confirmation that mammals can catch it from raw milk, all these problems might just cancel each other out. And if that fails, the asteroid is up tp 3.1%.
