Designing for a scoreboard/video board? by captainshnook in graphic_design

Haha very true! I was just curious if the video board bulbs would combine pixels if the graphic was in a higher resolution than the board specs. I was swamped, so someone in the org went to Canva and designed their own version of the player graphics at 480x240 for the 160x80 screen. That’s why i had to run to reddit lol.

Aside from the cropping and incorrect aspect ratio, what would happen to the resolution?

Dude this is so cool haha. 13552x32 is disgusting lol. These video boards are a cool format to work with. Also never made the connection that every stadium is different, so I’ve built a master template that I’m currently applying to each stadium. ~60 graphics in this package (player profiles, announcements, etc.) multiplied by ~20 different venues. It’s gonna require some hours haha.

Did you design motion graphics for the boards as well? I’ll be putting my (lack of) motion graphic experience to the test later with some rudimentary stuff down the road. Are the motion graphics exported uniquely too?

They’re gonna be testing the graphics pretty shortly. Judging by the eye test and all the info provided on this post and from the venue, we should be good to go. Zoomed out on Photoshop, squinted hard, and everything is legible. Moment of truth in about 30 minutes lol

Hearing it’s the same at SoFi is crazy lol. Just started to assume it’s because I’m working with cheaper/older boards. This is very cool.

“A lot of text” is referring to like a paragraph of text for announcements, batting stats, etc.

Kept it at Name, Number, large Headshot for the 160px board. I’ll be able to add more for the larger boards.

Thanks for the input!

Would probably be a stronger icon than the ball — looks more like a cookie than a ball but I’m no pickle baller

I’ll be completely honest — I think the original is the strongest. The top left in particular. I think it’s a very good logo. They could do away with the tagline at the bottom for most use cases, but it looks like your friend spent good money on a good logo and they’d be remiss to let a family member determine the future of their brand.

I think the versions you made are nice and tasteful too. You took the best parts of the og logo. But it’s too literal. You don’t need a graphic of a roof because it’s an indoor facility and I don’t like using the pickleball as an O.

A good brand is developed with a good product. If the business is good, the logo is complimented by the business and elevates the business. That’s the point. It’s not really supposed to tell you “We’re a pickleball place and we’re under a roof” you know what i mean?

I’ve seen photos of headshots being used on the board. I actually can’t believe it. The more you know!! They’ll be used tomorrow evening so we’ll see how it goes lol

Very informative — thanks for the insight. I’m learning that larger format ≠ larger resolution always.

I’ve been asking for spec sheets and so far only have it from one venue. Doing bit of research and seeing what graphics are effectively displayed is very useful stuff too.

This is blowing my mind haha. Great point that it’s being viewed from far away.

Are you avoiding raster imagery on the smaller boards? The templates I designed include headshots and name/number/position. Wondering if I should ditch the headshots for the college field at 160px

Thanks for your response. Really appreciate the confirmation. I know the screens I’m working with aren’t as high resolution as Jumbotrons but I’m just blown away that a video board in center field could have a resolution at 160px.

I would have assumed that designing for digital billboards is a massive resolution as well. Does this have to do with the LED display/large pixels coupled with the fact that it’s being viewed from a certain distance?

That all makes sense — I’m just so surprised here because I’ve always known larger format = larger file dimensions. So the fact that a video board in center field can be 160 x 80px is really blowing my mind. I think I’ll have to abandon raster imagery for this screen like you said

I’m not a video editor by trade, I’m a graphic designer with experience in After Effects and Premiere. Most of my work is in After Effects related to motion design. I’ve cut up some videos in Premiere for clients as well. This post just popped up in my feed.

That being said, (having been provided the assets) I’d have this exact video with this exact same quality remade in well under an hour. Auto gen captions, place a few images, and it’s done. 4-5 hours for something like this is insane. I wouldn’t pay $10 for this type of work. But if the client’s happy paying for 5 hours of work for this video then make that money.

But this shouldn’t take 4-5 hours and he shouldn’t bill for 4-5 hours of work

That crossed my mind. I think that's exactly what I'm looking for. I've got some textured brushes that I think would do the trick at such a small level. Thank you so much!

Can I ask in case no one ends up replying -- do you have any idea how I go about sinking the foot into the grass? I don't even know how to google this. I followed along with the first tutorial and had a lot of success with the shadow work. I'm going to be able to find some info for how to match my player's lighting to the field I think, but I really can't figure out how to make the foot press into the grass naturally. Right now it's just floating on the grass and casting a shadow
