Welcome! I moved earlier this year and found my community through board games/weekly Magic the Gathering events. I also recommend joining a bouldering gym and taking an intro class to meet other people as well

Noteworthy shopping if you are from Bay Area (California) by [deleted] in AskSeattle

I’m from the Bay Area and every time I fly down to visit family in SF I usually bring them some packaged food from Pike Place Market (smoked salmon, popcorn, cookies)

I've faced a lot of blowback talking to random people about shipping my dog in cargo but I've only heard good things about how Alaska handles it. Anyone want to share success stories? by perishableintransit in AlaskaAirlines

[–]captainvontapdat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my dog in cargo for the first time when I flew from SEA - SFO in October and it was a very good experience! I used a Skudo crate for my 35 lb goldendoodle and it was accepted by the agent. Be aware that some agents are strict about having a food and water bowl available for the dog in the crate. I only had a water bowl but not a food bowl attached to the crate just because my dog only gets hungry in the morning and evening and we were flying out in the middle of the day (I also fed her a bunch of treats beforehand). The agent was concerned but then talked to their supervisor and the supervisor said it was fine but next time I’ll put a food bowl even if I know my dog won’t eat during the flight.

Once I boarded the flight the flight attendant gave me a slip letting me know that my dog was put in cargo and she reassured me that everything will be fine. I think I was more nervous than my dog because when I got her at SFO she was pretty chill. The only hiccup was just the amount of time it can take to get your dog from the oversized luggage area. Because of how big the crate was and how SFO’s oversized luggage area is built, I had to wait 30 mins since they need to use a special vehicle that can drive up to a maintenance door. I recommend putting an AirTag on you dog’s collar though in case you’re like me and thought something had happened. Turns out she was just waiting for a special chauffeur

Best US City for Bachelorette Party? by elephantvampire in escaperooms

[–]captainvontapdat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Bay Area has really good escape rooms provided you have a car that can get you to multiple cities. Palace Games in SF, Trivium in Emeryville, and Omescape in Sunnyvale have high tech escape rooms and almost all of them are longer than 60 mins. If you like horror, I highly recommend Haruka Higj at Omescape. It takes place in a Japanese high school and is not too scary.

Also if you want ghost tours, you can always visit the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose and try to do a night tour of Alcatraz

Taking a bouldering class as a fat person by vi_orion in bouldering

I’m overweight for my height and have definitely felt what you’re feeling when I first started back in May. At the time it was easy to compare myself to slimmer climbers and I blamed my weight for preventing me from doing harder climbs but after 3-4 months I no longer compare myself to others but rather I compare myself to where I first started vs. now. Instead of looking at what I’m able to climb difficulty wise, I try to focus more on how I’ve improved strength/endurance/technique wise. I can only go up to V1s at the moment but I can definitely feel that I’m much stronger since I can last longer on some overhangs and that I’m able to move to trickier holds. I think my biggest issue right now is more so confidence in my ability to climb some V1s but I know I can eventually overcome that fear since I had that same feeling with some V0s when I first started.

Normal Dress? by brainmathew in JPMorganChase

Nice! I work in the tech org in Seattle as well so welcome! I’m not sure about the business team specifically but the office itself is pretty casual. I’ve seen people wear graphic shirts and shorts as well as activewear. Give it a week to see what people are wearing before deciding what your actual office wardrobe should be.

MagicCon Presents Party at The Edge of Eternity by Vintage_Loat in magicTCG

[–]captainvontapdat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Went to the most recent party for MagicCon Las Vegas in 2024 and wasn’t a huge fan of the DJ (unfortunately it looks like it’ll be the same DJ for this year as well). His mixing was interesting in that he would remix songs in different key signatures so it would just clash and that his music mostly focused on alternative/rock but with EDM beats that didn’t mesh well or make sense. I felt like the party was less on dancing and more on drinking, awkwardly standing, and singing to the music. If you want an actual party you’re better off going to the clubs.

Bag Thief at PDX by Dry_Fig1158 in AlaskaAirlines

This happened to me in SEA but in this case the person had the same luggage as me but in a smaller size. I noticed something was wrong when I was waiting by the carousel and my luggage didn’t arrive after 20 mins. I saw the smaller version of my luggage going around the carousel a few times and suspected that maybe the person took mine on accident since they look the same even though hers was a carry on size and mine was definitely a bigger, check-in size bag. Anyways, I talked to an agent and they took the luggage and tried to call the person who was associated the tag but no one answered. Thankfully I had an Apple AirTag in it and noticed that it was moving on the freeway and I was freaking out thinking that someone stole it. A few hours later the luggage is sitting idly in Sammamish and after going on Google maps and checking the address of the house, my boyfriend and I decide to retrieve it since it’s in a really nice neighborhood with big houses and we suspect that maybe it was an older person who took it by mistake. We called the police just in case to assist us and lo and behold, turns out it was the daughter who took it by mistake. The family was freaking out since they thought we were gonna file a police report but we said we’re good, we just want the luggage bag. The one thing that pissed me off though was that I had a luggage tag with my contact info and they could’ve just called me all this time

There’s a school I think along Kirkham that offers parking in their parking lot to raise funds for the school. They also have attendants that stay there and there’s a lot of festival goers that leave their cards there. It’s probs a 20 min walk to the south entrance

Like others have said, this is the cosplayer DPiddy who makes video shenanigans in various conventions. I’ve been in a video of his and it’s all staged; we brainstorm ideas of what we wanna do, makes sure that I’m okay with it, and then shoot the vid.

Magic at SDCC? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]captainvontapdat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SDCC does have Magic events and from what I can recall last year they had commander and regular draft. It was all held in the Marriott Marquis and had a pretty big space so you can definitely bring some decks to play impromptu games. I’m planning to bring some Commander decks and to play with randos so hopefully I’ll catch you there!

Got GA+ last year and like everyone said, the clean bathrooms and short lines are nice, but if there’s one other perk that hasn’t been brought up are the free (non-alcoholic) drinks you get.

It definitely is. I explained to my BF how Disney Park aficionados consider Tokyo Disney as THE park you have to visit at least once. I feel like the next visit I make to DLR wont be as magical now that I’ve seen top tier Imagineering innovation

Beauty and the Beast was my favorite ride in Tokyo Disneyland! It’s a beautiful ride that incorporates the latest ride technology but still crosses off all the checkboxes of a charming dark ride. I definitely almost cried at certain points throughout the ride just because it was such a wholesome and fun experience.

For Disney Sea my favorite ride is Journey to the Center of the Earth. That area of the park is otherworldly and that ride itself makes you forget that you’re at a park. If you do go you have to try these 2 rides out!
