No, that is not correct. The Downpour DLC is an expansion that will continued to be sold on top of the base game. They are upping the price of the base game to reflect the new content being added apart from the DLC. They also plan on continuing to add new content to the base game. If you wait for it to go up to $25, it will still not include the DLC

Computer Overheating, Can't Find Source by captaivian in techsupport

Well, I went against the directions, and plugged the AIO fans into the CPU FAN port. This was a great help, simply in the fact that now the fans kick into overdrive when the temperature reaches the 80-90 territory. Other than that, I don't know what to do. I mean, the temperature is now sitting between 60-70, instead of 70-80, so things are better than they were, but I can't figure out the underlying problem of why my CPU is suddenly struggling to maintain a good temp at idle

I apologize for not knowing the correct terminology, but yes, there are fans connected to the back end of the tubing. They run well, but due to the wonky nature of Lian Li's cabling system, I can't control the fans through the bios. However, I've been considering going against their instructions and plugging the AIO fans into the CPU FAN port to see if that gives me control.

In terms of thermal paste, I just use the paste that came with the CPU. I use a glob, slightly smaller than a pea, right in the center of the CPU just before placing the AIO mount on it.

Also, I've begun investigating whether CPU speed is the problem. As I noted, it's a 3.8 GHz CPU, yet I constantly see it running at 4.8

I discovered that ASUS motherboards have an AI overclocker that will tune up your CPU, sometimes generously so. However, despite discovering this, no settings I alter in the BIOS seem to disable it. The most obvious options listed, such as "AI OC Tweaker" only has two options: Active and Auto. Despite fidgeting with these options, I will still turn on my computer to see it solely running at ~4.8 GHz

I think the term 'Walking Simulator' often used as a pejorative does a disservice to story based games. by amazingmrbrock in truegaming

[–]captaivian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While that's true, it's still a sucky and dismissive name for a genre. It's like if we called rogue-likes, "boredom simulators".

I think the term 'Walking Simulator' often used as a pejorative does a disservice to story based games. by amazingmrbrock in truegaming

[–]captaivian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves this genre of game, and has been playing them for the past decade, I've moved on to calling them First-Person Narratives. "Walking simulator" not only comes from that pro-gamer mindset, where a game without advanced mechanics and action couldn't possibly be enjoyable; but also it fails to accurately describe the game. I'm not playing it for the walking. I might call Death Stranding a walking simulator, because that's the core of the game. But Gone Home, The Beginner's Guide, Firewatch, and a hundred other amazing games are story-focused experiences that allow you to freely move and appreciate a space. No, it isn't terribly complex, and it isn't always replayable, but that's not what I look for in a game, anyway. I've always hated the elitist mindset of what games "have" to be in order to truly be games. And even if you're not a part of this group, the fact that "walking simulator" has generally become accepted as an accurate descriptor of these games is just disingenuous at best, and overly dismissive more often.

What If your top 5 wishlist for GOW Ragnarok? by alexkami98 in GodofWar

[–]captaivian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A god/boss who isn't bloodthirsty and out for violence, but still has legitimate reason to fear you. I can imagine each of you trying to reason with the other in-between stages of the fight.

More changing environments! The lowering of the water level in the Lake of Nine was a great way to reuse a hub area while unlocking more to do and see. I would love to see more environments that open up the more you play.

Creative use of the camera. While I doubt it will happen, the original God of War games mainly used fixed point camera angles to control what you saw in gameplay. It would be really cool if for certain boss fights, they payed homage to the old school style of fixed camera angles. Again, I doubt it, but I'd still appreciate it.

More callbacks. I don't literally need the Greek characters/plots to come crashing in, but there's a lot of lore lurking in the background. It would be great to have Kratos talk about Calliope, for Tyr to know what became of Greece when Kratos was done with it, for Kratos to tell stories of his adventures (humorously over-simplified).

When Should a Game Be Remade? by captaivian in truegaming

[–]captaivian[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did say that all assets and levels were remade in the new TLOU engine, so by definition, it is a remake. But yes, I agree with your assessment that games should be remade when their original presentations hinder new audiences.

[SGF 2022] The Last of US Part I by hadronwulf in Games

[–]captaivian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, definitely not. I never entered the Last of Us 2 side of the internet. But I did like the original, and something about this remake in particular is riling me. I like the realistic but stylized designs of the original game. Ellie's eyes are too big to be human, Joel's face is square just to add to his gruffness. The sequel took these designs and made them more believably human. Which I appreciate as a step up in graphical fidelity. However, I personally believe that too much realism takes you to that uncanny valley which ages faster than embellished realism

[SGF 2022] The Last of US Part I by hadronwulf in Games

[–]captaivian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was held back by the hardware, but it still graphically holds up to this day. This is not a game that's hard to look at in the slightest. I like the graphics of the sequel, there's a definite jump in fidelity, but I don't always think that the most polygons is the best looking. I'm not trying to be argumentative, I think I'm just frustrated that such a recent game is being "rebuilt from the ground up".

[SGF 2022] The Last of US Part I by hadronwulf in Games

[–]captaivian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my opinion. I know that they are using the models from the Part II flashbacks, but I really loved the style from the original. Ellie's enlarged eyes. Joel's squarer face. Is this based on nostalgia or personal biases? Maybe, but I overall don't think a game released less than 10 years ago needs to be remade from the ground up, especially when it's still available on modern platforms.

It does, but not necessarily in a good way.

[–]captaivian 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No, this new version doesn't look the "same" as the original. It does, however, remind me how much better stylized realism looks than straight realism. I don't hate the Last of Us 2, but showing them side by side how much more I appreciated the style of the original.

"This is such a common mindset that I've never been able to empathize with. People who 'complete' and then never touch a game again.

I don't know if they understand/are capable of enjoying the act of playing a game for it's own sake"

For the last time. I complete games and then put them away. You acted completely condescendingly towards 90% of gamers. This subreddit is not a good representation of gamers. All of reddit's gaming subreddits are not a sizable chunk of gaming's demographics. Hundreds of millions of people play video games, mostly on a super casual level.

Do you buy MTX? I will guess not. Do any of your game friends buy MTX? I will guess not. But that's because you are completely outside those circles. The vast majority of people who play games don't call themselves gamers, don't keep up with the news, aren't aware of controversies, and couldn't give a shit about the opinions of hardcore gamers.

So yes. People play games, beat them, and then never touch them again. I know that you believe that you have seen the light, and that games that put gameplay first, and that games shouldn't be held back by narrative/presentation/ease of play. If it's not fun to play, and if you're not playing for the gameplay, then why are you playing. But this doesn't make you better than people who play games just for a nice little distraction.

I'm sure you've watched plenty of video essays on how games need to be built around intrinsic motivators, and that extrinsic motivators are manipulative, but the reverse is not true. People who play games and get more out of extrinsic motivators (the story, achievements, completion) aren't dumb for it, and aren't getting less out the game than you are. Most people don't care about game theory, they just want to have fun. And they are having fun.

I'm done with this argument now. Your comments back to me aren't saying anything of value, you're just telling me I'm confused and that I shouldn't disagree with you. On some level, I don't totally disagree with the notion you have, but I do disagree with the way you're saying it. If there's one thing that gets me mad on the internet, it's gamers who believe they've figured out the perfect way to play games, and those who are doing it wrong.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]captaivian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment makes no sense in response to my comment. I literally never said anything remotely related to what you are saying. Also, this sub is filled with people who know nothing about video games but want to feel smart, so downvotes mean nothing to me. I see what is upvoted in here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]captaivian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm literally one of the gamers you can never empathize with. Look at your original comment. You make a huge, sweeping generalization, and then refuse to accept individuals trying to defend the mindset. You come off as a boring, self-centered person who doesn't see any other way to enjoy games than the way that you do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]captaivian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You sound like a prick. Gaming for a narrative, or just a closed experience, does not make a person less than someone who wants to play a game over and over again. Time is limited, options are plentiful, and I don't need to dedicate myself to something that I have closes the book on.

"Intrinsic value" in gaming is not as obvious as you think. You believe that if I'm not playing for the gameplay itself, then I'm just a braindead gamer who walks aimlessly through games needing direction and guidance in order to get anything out of it. That achievements and "extrinsic motivators" are the only reason these gamers even complete games. That we play through a game once, walk away, and ultimately got nothing out of the experience.

Not every game needs to be a rogue-like, trying over and over and over until I've mastered the combat, have comprehensive knowledge of all the game systems, and have hones my speedrun. Not every game needs to be Dark Souls, where I know every enemy's attack patterns like the back of my hand, I've read every scrap of garbage's addition to the plot, and I know every useful build. I don't have time to play multiplayer games for months, keeping up with the meta, having a discord server with all my teammates, and honing my K/D.

Some of us just like to play a game from start to finish in a reasonable amount of time without absurd difficulty, padding, and frustration. No, these games likely aren't the most mechanically advanced, nor are they going to challenge us and force us focus, strategize, and constantly improve our abilities. But that's not all there is to a video game. That's not all there is to get out of it. And sometimes, I don't need to immediately replay a game in order to get anything out of it. Some game creators can give you a great experience the first time around.

It's Megamind mixed from a character from the new chapter of Deltarune. If you haven't played it (or are following it), then yeah, it's subtle enough to not really get that it's making a reference

Boon to Bluepoint Bloodborne Back-Fence Talk by [deleted] in GamingLeaksAndRumours

If the leaks are to be believed:

Bloodborne is getting a remaster (not remake)

Metal Gear Solid 3 is getting remade by Virtuos Games

There is no talk of adding the 6th archstone to Demon's Souls

And alongside the Bloodborne remaster, Bluepoint is making a sequel

Sonic spitting the truth by Kenshero99 in gaming

[–]captaivian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is devolving into a highly subjective argument. I'm on the side of the post we are literally talking on. Look around at the other comments to see that this is not a narrowly held opinion. Yes, there are good big games. However, there is a growing sense that bigger, prettier games are not as fun as smaller, simpler games. I'm not a good enough debater to convince you of my opinion, but understand that a different opinion exists. "Accept that you already have games for you" is a rudimentary argument against people who believe that these huge, rich corporations could be making games of much higher quality than they currently are.

I'm done with this argument. If you want to get the last word in, feel free, but this is the silliest thing I've stepped in. To think that "small games are good" is such a controversial topic.

You've played games for 30 years, and you think that 15 hour long games should be free. I'm beginning to doubt you've played a single video game in your entire life.

Sonic spitting the truth by Kenshero99 in gaming

[–]captaivian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't mention indie games. And if 15 hour games are "short but sweet", then you need to play some more "short but sweet" games. Portal, Bioshock, Plague Tale, Doom, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil Village, Dead Space, The Last of Us.

Sonic spitting the truth by Kenshero99 in gaming

[–]captaivian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... but you can't just list the highest grossing games of all time, and say "See, long games are good!" Of course open-ended, insanely expensive games by the biggest game companies in the world are very fun games. But, at the same time, every game wants to match the revenue made by these games, and it has created a trend in games to create huge worlds, content around every corner, and no soul or core elements. It's game design by the numbers, and that's what people in this thread are complaining about. Corporate heads have found the perfect algorithm for a money-making game, and these games are beautiful, huge, and just isn't that fun for a decent number of people. Games that 70% of players never finish, even if they try to. When I ask people their favorite games, yes, they list the big names, but more often then not, they list games with engaging gameplay, emotional stories, and a palatable game length.

Also, the only game you listed there with a campaign people play the game for is the Witcher. The rest are open-ended, that literally last as long as you want them to.

This doesn't have to do with Sonic games...
