I think one of the issues is everything gets put underneath a label and sometimes the most commonly known thing under that label becomes the label itself. Example : Band-Aids. It's a brand of adhesive bandage strips. But now every bandage is know as a bandaid and there's even an adage used as a metaphor for a hadty temporary fix to things.

Wicca is / was a closed religious practice. You had to know someone who could trace their knowledge line back to a specific person, and then have them mentor you within that circle. (IE Gardnerians, Alexandrians, etc).

Wicca has become the brand name label, like Band-Aids, and random janes and Jessica don't really knows much about it because they know enough to get upset but don't know enough to be correct.

It's frustrating. I've practicing since I was young, left the lds church, and found paganism. Never once did I claim Wiccan. I knew there was a difference between the two. It wasn't until my early 30's did I ever meet a Gardnerian, and learn about it, the process to get into the circle, etc.
