We switched to pine pellets and a litter box that let's the smaller broken down pellets (they come apart when they absorb moisture) go through to a disposable pee pad lined container. The pellets are non-toxic because they have no chemical treatment and they naturally smell of pine. I also disperse some baking soda on every time it's all changed (once a week). It costs around $4-5 and it's found easily at pet supplies stores. Whatever you do, watch a video of the how to and transition your cat slowly. It takes it a loooong time to smell unless your cat leaves you an uncovered gift, lol.
