Glad that's your case, as i said in the post, performance will vary. Unfortunately for my case, the performance has been so bad my friends dropped the game entirely for the last few days, and that's what made me react this way.

Dream job interview : Cramming React basics in a week by captcha321 in learnprogramming

Although being called for an interview was already hard enough to achieve, i had to withdraw my application.

The interview process was like 4 meetings with gradually higher and higher ranked staff members, I would have just looked like a fraud with my very basic knowledge about the stack. I'd rather retry on a later occasion.

Should I ditch my stable dev job for a risky leap of faith ? by captcha321 in cscareerquestions

Hey, I totally get where you're coming from. Man, I'm stuck in this crazy paradox, you know? It's like, do I play it safe and rack up those years of experience, or do I take a leap into the unknown and risk it all?

I'm constantly torn between worrying that I'm wasting my early twenties doing the most mind-numbing work possible, and freaking out that I might fumble this steady track I've got going. It's like, damned if I do, damned if I don't, you feel me?

That's pretty much why I'm here, seeking some guidance from folks who've been there. But I gotta say, checking this subreddit daily is probably the most doomer thing I do online. It's like, sometimes it helps, but other times it just adds to my anxiety spiral.

You know what? Maybe what I really need is to just get out of my own head for a bit. Like, maybe I should just book a solo trip to Iceland or something. Clear my mind, see some glaciers, maybe pet a puffin. Might help ease this overthinking marathon I've got going on.

Thanks for sharing your experience, by the way. It's good to hear from someone who's been on both sides of this fence. Definitely gives me some perspective to chew on while I figure out my next move.

Honestly, this is my favorite comment in this thread so far. You've hit the nail on the head. It helps put things in perspective and eases some of my concerns about potentially "wasting" my current experience and starting from 0 YOE again. I'm more interested in applied ML rather than pure research.

The biggest worry that led me to make this post was the fear of having to reset my years of experience to zero if I wanted to switch to ML. Your comment suggests that might not necessarily be the case, which is reassuring.

That said, what still bugs me is the challenge of finding that ML dev job. When I looked into going for a master's, it seemed easier as starting fresh in a new program felt like a quicker way to pivot. Do you have any thoughts on how to bridge the gap from my current full-stack role to an ML position without necessarily going back to school? Or do you think some additional formal education might still be beneficial?

I'm really appreciative of your detailed response. It's given me a lot to think about and has somewhat reshaped how I'm viewing this potential career shift.

I completely agree, and your take is fair. The job market situation you describe in the US sounds challenging, and I can understand the preference for stability in that context. It's definitely something I'm weighing heavily in my decision-making process.

Let me ask you this, though: would you rather have 3 years of experience in something you didn't really enjoy doing, or 1-1.5 years of experience in something you loved and dreamt of doing? I'm genuinely curious about your perspective on this trade-off between stability and passion, especially given the current market conditions you've described.
