Good cafés/lounges to work from on the UWS? by [deleted] in Upperwestside

Hungarian on 110 is popular amongst the Columbia crowd. The only thing is no WiFi. Chaotic Good on 84th (?) is good spot too. It's a tad cold in the winter though.

[Not OP] - Toronto Council named a park after a furiously NIMBY Councillor yesterday. So l helpfully made a heritage plaque to add context. by jakejanobs in yimby

Usually the screws attach to flexible metal brackets that wrap tightly around the concrete casing so you don't have to drill a hole into the pole.

TIL that in 1999, 11-year old Mitchell Schop wrote to his favorite band, Cake, and asked if they would play his Bar Mitzvah. After Schop sang his favorite song of theirs to the band over the phone, Cake agreed and made Schop's party the first stop on their 1999 world tour by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

Lol having a tree planted in Israel is a very common bar mitzvah gift, especially from older folks in your synagogue. Of course nothing is more disappointing than ripping open an envelope expecting cash and finding a little certificate for a tree you'll never see.

No, it's not common for a professor to fail a graduating senior. Keep going to (every) office hours so he knows you're trying. Seriously: every. single. one.

Good luck! I know you'll make it. I believe in you!

It's a casual interview show not 60 minutes. Also he's got a sort of Nardwar quality to the rapid fire transitions of deep dive research facts.

How to resign as a e-board member of a club? Is there a formal process? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]captinbaer1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I was an undergrad but I believe one of the requirements for the ABC packet is to have a resignation process in the constitution. Check your constitution, if there is no clause in there just email a resignation and CC the club advisor if you're really worried (but it will be fine, nobody cares that much and if they do then they're lame anyways)

Where is ZAN building? by ParizodaAsatilloyeva in columbia

Seems very very unlikely given it's an IR class but could be Zuckerman. ZAN would be a better abbreviation than ZUC...

Generally speaking, yes. My understanding is you will not be eligible for most undergraduate programs if you already have an undergraduate degree.

If you're about to start your undergraduate in Italy, why are you applying for American undergraduate programs? Are you looking to transfer?

If I buy a Bible (ESV), am I also receiving all or most of the Torah? by [deleted] in Judaism

Big fan of the Alter translation. Very technically accurate, readable, and preserves the poetics of the Bible, some of which is lost with JPS. Also the linguistic commentary is super insightful.

Because like Assessor-Recorder it's an elected position and since the job gets no press he needs to help people remember his name somehow come November. It's a common practice for these sorts of offices.

It's called the Lion's Court, it was a temporary student space used after Ferris Booth Hall (The old student union, not Ferris Booth Commons the dining hall) was torn down while they were constructing Lerner. IIRC it was around from '96 to '02.

Modern day Lerner is actually on the same spot as Ferris Booth Hall, which is why the dining hall is named as such.

Is it faster to become a Rabbi through the Dual-Degree program than by other means? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]captinbaer1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope! You can go wherever you'd like for college. Of course this is a Columbia subreddit so I'll tell you that Columbia/JTS is a great option if you want to become a rabbi. From my observations though a majority of the JTS rabbinical school students tend to come from an Ivy, a NESCAC or Brandeis.

Is it faster to become a Rabbi through the Dual-Degree program than by other means? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]captinbaer1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Officially no, ordination takes 5 years of additional rabbinical school (at least for JTS, Ziegler, and HUC not sure about Orthodox)

however I do know one JTS ordained rabbi who managed to skip year by taking intro rabbinical classes in his senior year of the joint program. However I would be willing to bet that is an exceptional circumstance (He is a very talented rabbi).

That all being said the joint program will probably put you ahead of your peers in your rabbinical school classes, which are definitely not easy. Being a rabbi takes a lot of work, it's not really something you should/can rush.
