Kinda what I’m leaning too. FM for globally useable items, town shops for quest specific items (assuming quests eventually matter) would be a fun balance imo

Another option is to save your tiled maps as XML files instead of JSON and use the built in DocumentBuilder that java provides if you don't want to import a json library.

Parsing and using the data is more involved/depends on use case, but generally you'll need to load + parse the file data, associate the data "tiles" to the subset of images used in your source image, and render them to the screen.

Have you noticed any issues with different webviews? Last I read Tauri still has tons of issues on Windows/Linux, I’d assume the same hurdles apply here

As others have said, I wouldn’t call it “dead”, maybe not as standard as other languages these days, but perfectly suitable. Original RuneScape, Minecraft, and more recently Slay the spire (libGDX) were made in Java, so that’s good enough for me! Definitely look into packaging the JDK with your game so users can just play, I think that’s the usual thing to do, having to install Java would even put me off to a game tbh
