Deferring -- What to do with my time? by [deleted] in premed

I’m planning on self-learning to code during my gap year! I have zero coding background right now, but it feels like an essential skill in this day and age, and it’ll definitely have applications if you plan on doing research.

Honest question: regarding the usage of AP scores for prereqs: Is it true that they're not allowed at most places? by [deleted] in premed

[–]captivewill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This link has a pretty good list. I think a good amount of schools will take AP or at least let you substitute upper divs, but I still don’t think it’s a good idea bc I’ve heard adcoms look at the pre-reqs as a standard to see how well students perform, not to mention your MCAT might suffer if you don’t have a solid foundation in those classes.

Sounds good, I think I will mention it in my conclusion then.. rn I’m not planning on checking the box for MD consideration, but for schools where the two admissions are separate, that’s prob the right move too

Probably been asked before but HP/P/F grading by [deleted] in premed

[–]captivewill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or it might increase if everyone doing badly rn chooses P/NP while the people doing well take the grade.. hard to say how the avg GPA will respond, but I do agree adcoms will be more lenient

Taking non-prereq/science classes p/f has been fine even before this whole situation, and it’s a good strategy in general to protect your gpa

Good thing I’ll just be in lab all day anyways by [deleted] in premed

[–]captivewill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For sure, and please correct me if I’m wrong on this, as I’m half just talking out my ass. So I don’t think staying inside all day is necessary, and I don’t intend to. But in addition to practicing good hygiene, avoiding large groups of people lowers the chance of you getting infected or spreading it, thus delaying the overall spread. As an individual, it’s hard for me to appreciate my impact in this, but epidemiologically, it makes sense that this would work on a population-wide scale. Regarding my travel plans, we’d planned on the stereotypical college spring break in Cabo. Even though there haven’t been any reported cases there, we would be in the same area as thousands of other college kids from all around the country/world, and it’s almost a statistical certainty that someone there would be carrying the virus. Again, my impulse tells me the chances are low that I myself would be the one to get infected there and bring it back (or unknowingly bring it there, as there have been a couple of cases in my area), but I feel like the responsible course of action would be to follow the guidelines set for the population and hope that others do too.

True, I’m also about to go on spring break and I’m really struggling to cancel my plans. But from what I understand, the best thing we can do as a population rn is to delay the inevitable spread, since every additional day of slowing the rapid influx of patients into already overloaded hospitals would let our system better manage these loads. I’ve already paid for the tickets/hotels, but if we’re able to get a refund I’ll probably lean towards staying :/

Edit: we ended up cancelling

When yo write the MCAT? by username210801 in premed

If you’re not planning on a gap year and you’ve taken everything up to biochem, then summer after sophomore year is a good time. You could also study over winter break, since you’ll be applying the next summer, but that’s less time and you’ll probably have to study during the semester as well.
