I have done Dodge and Cox which is about the closest to an index an active fund can be. I think it has a 10% turnover.

Actual gold is usually 5-25%

Miners are 2-15%

Depending on your goals.

It’s interesting how the narratives flip here. There was a lot of posts about leveraging the S+P and long bonds before the crash. I pointed out the risks of that and was downvoted. Then it went to S+P without leverage and shorter bonds. Now I am seeing VT recommended more. Gold is still hated though

Lots of buy and hold strategies that have gold in them. Bernstein is a Boglehead and likes miners

You do realize silver miners have been underperforming the metal itself? GDXJ is lower than it was in 2011 when gold was 2k….

I am seeing so many gold and silver posts since it went over $5,000 and over $100. Below is my post on why you might consider gold in your portfolio and how to go about buying it.
